June 2011
Greetings!

Summer is here and CFI is thriving. The recent months have been filled with many accomplishments. Read on to meet two CFI students - Seavyi and Chanthea.

We look forward to celebrating this Wednesday with our friends and supporters in Colorado at Jonesy's Eat Bar from 6:00 - 8:00pm, where we will be premiering our newest CFI video. The Denver event will introduce the CFI Giving Tree, a unique opportunity to support what's most important to you.

We are very thankful for your continued support,

Seavyi making jewelry from Coconut husks

Got Gecko?

Two years ago, when Jenny and Andrew met Seavyi in a run-down orphanage, they were drawn to his intelligence, kind demeanor and his determination to succeed despite his circumstances. Rather than attend school, he and the other children were forced to perform traditional dances for tourists in order to earn money for food. Shortly after Seavyi left the orphanage, CFI began to support him. CFI found him a space to live in a family-like dormitory, helped him to reintegrate into public school, and provided his monthly living and school expenses.

In addition to being a full-time student, Seavyi also works as an intern for a local NGO that partners with CFI. He teaches computer workshops and started a business selling his hand carved coconut jewelry. His best-selling item is the gecko bracelet.

Seavyi is incredibly clever, motivated, and continues to surprise us with his newest business ideas. He enjoys teaching others and helping everyone in any way that he can.

With CFI's support, Seavyi will graduate high school in two years. We are proud and inspired by everything he has worked hard to accomplish.

Seavyi's beautiful gecko bracelets will be available at our June 22nd Denver event

CFI student plays soccer in Vietnam

Chanthea has been a CFI student since January 2010. Like all of our students, she comes from a very difficult background and it has been a struggle to continue her education. She lives with her family in an impoverished village near CFI's Learning Center.

Chanthea loves to spend time with her friends on the CFI soccer field and plays on one of our girls’ soccer teams. In early 2011 she was selected to play on Cambodia’s National 14 and under Girls’ Team. Earlier this month, the team traveled to Vietnam to join the AFC Festival of Football, where they competed against teams from all over Asia. Coach Sam Schweingruber from SALT Academy in Battambang, a CFI partner, led the team. They held their ground but were defeated several times by stronger (and taller) opponents. They did have one victory; Chanthea and the Cambodian National team defeated Vietnam 2:1.

When she returned, Chanthea, sweet and calm as usual, smiled proudly while her friends surrounded her, excited to hear all about her big trip.
