Branching Out

  February 14th, 2012

Greetings!

Happy Valentines Day!

Our team is busy preparing for our upcoming year of plantings, special events and volunteer opportunities.  Want us to come to your city?  Is it outside of the Wasatch Front? Apply for TreeUtah's 2012 tree planting grant.  This will allow us to plant trees at your city or community in public spaces such as parks.  Check it out here: http://treeutah.org/programs/2012-grants-program/.

TreeUtah is also looking for committed volunteers to become Team Leaders at our plantings.  If you think you have what it takes
to be a leader at our community tree plantings, email me at volunteer@treeutah.org.

Check out the rest of this newsletter if you like snowshoeing, community workshops,  job opportunities and of course, trees.

Have a great week,

Snowshoe Hike with Cottonwood Canyons Foundation - Saturday, February 25th

Join TreeUtah and the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation for a snowshoe hike exploring the trees of the Wasatch on Saturday, February 25th, 10am at Spruces Campground in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The hike will last approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. We'll identify and talk about the trees that are found in the Wasatch and their role in the ecosystem. We'll even delve into the history of forestry in the Wasatch. We're looking forward to learning something new and we hope you'll join us!

Attendees should plan to bringing their own snowshoes, and dressing more warmly than if they would just be solidly snowshoeing, as we'll stop and chat along the way.  The hike will be on relatively gentle, flat terrain. All ages and abilities welcome.

Because of the nature of this activity, space is limited and all attendees must register to participate. To register or if you have additional questions, contact Alex Porpora, Education Coordinator, education@treeutah.org

Planting and Education Assistant (Americorps)

This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to learn more about tree plantings, ecological restoration, and environmental education in addition to gaining professional non-profit experience.

The Americorps intern will assist the Planting Coordinator with projects related to the urban and community forest program and assist the Educational Coordinator in developing and implementing a variety of environmental education for both young people and adults. The hands-on field experience will include a variety of tasks including working with volunteers to plant trees, caring for newly planted trees, recording wildlife sightings and natural history events on our environmental education site, The Redwood Nature Area.
