Branching Out

  July 11th, 2011

Greetings!

What does TreeUtah do during the summer time? Since it is too hot and dry to plant trees, what are we doing? Well the answer is far from short.

On a bright and sunny Wednesday throughout the July and August you will find Vaughn Lovejoy working with volunteers at the EcoGarden and Community Orchard. During the summer we work hard with volunteers to care for the trees and plants at the EcoGarden.

Another place you can find us is along the Jordan River at the Redwood Nature Area. This summer we have youth groups joining us for our new summer outdoor education program. The Redwood Ranger Adventure Day field trip has been developed so that we can lead fun activities for children ages 8 and up on this beautiful wetland and woodland habitat.

This month we will be hosting a wonderful shade tree workshop with Meridith Perkins Urban Forestry Coordinator for Utah's Department of Natural Resources. Join us at Wasatch Commons on July 30th to learn how you can use shade trees to help cool your home. Hope to see you there!

Regards,

Gena

On June 30th TreeUtah brought a group of 23 youth from the Redwood Recreation Center outdoors for a morning filled with fun activities. This was the first of many field trips planned for this summer's Redwood Ranger Adventure Day Program.

The Redwood Ranger kids had a fun time walking, running and even learning in the Redwood Nature Area wetland habitat. They learned about why native trees like the Fremont Cottonwood are good habitat for wildlife and help to clean our environment.

All of the Redwood Ranger kids got to wear rubber boots, and waded into the wetland ponds to see what they could find. It was wet and muddy but the children got to see what was living in the ponds as part of this wetland ecosystem.

We are looking forward to having more youth groups take part in the Redwood Ranger kids program. Contact Gena Christie to learn more.

A special thank you to Salt Lake County's Million Trees for partnering with TreeUtah to run the Redwood Ranger Adventure Days.

News from the EcoGarden and Community Orchard

TreeUtah volunteers are amazing!

Guild 8 EcoGarden
Fruit tree guild number 8 at the EcoGarden and Orchard

TreeUtah's EcoGarden and Community Orchard has been a buzz this summer with busy worker bees of all kinds. The trees have blossomed with a beautiful community of understory plants, some of which are the undesirable weeds!

With the help of the wonderful youth from the Salt Lake County Early Intervention Program we have completely weeded and mulched two of our guilds. One of TreeUtah's Team Leaders and star volunteer Eric Freeman has done an amazing job of getting the drip irrigation system up and running for the season.

Many thanks to the wonderful youth and to Eric for all their invaluable work, which has us tremendously to care for the EcoGarden and Community Orchard. Also,

a special thank you to Smith's Food and Drug Stores for the very generous donation of 100 bags of mulch.

To learn more about the EcoGarden's trees, plants, and sustainable techniques join us for a lunch time tour on July 20th. Also, we hope that you will join us for a series of workshops coming this September.

Register online, call (801) 364-2122. or email Vaughn Lovejoy.
