Branching Out

  June 8th, 2011

Greetings!

London Planetree
Looking up at a beautiful mature London Plane tree outside the TreeUtah Office

This Spring has been truly amazing. With lots of hard work and wonderful volunteers we were able to plant 2,049 trees! A total of 2,438 volunteers helped us to plant these trees and care for previously planted trees. Over 1,200 volunteers participated in 28 different projects to make these tree plantings possible. Trees were planted at TreeUtah's EcoGarden, along the Jordan River in South Jordan, at the Redwood Nature Area, along Parley's Trail, at five elementary schools across the state, at the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, and Wheeler Farm.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us to plant trees this Spring. Also, a great thanks to an additional 1,200 volunteers that have helped us to care for newly planted trees and have worked so diligently at the EcoGarden and Community Orchard!

I invite you to join us outdoors this Summer. You can find us every Wednesday morning at our Orchard Care Day work parties in the EcoGarden and Orchard. Come on one of our Nature Walks and see what is going on in the wetlands along the Jordan River. Check out our upcoming events below and visit us online www.treeutah.org to learn more.

Best,

Something has been cutting down trees at the Redwood Nature Area! The culprit seems to have a preference for willows and poplars, especially those growing by ponds, canals, and the Jordan River. There is very little evidence of the crime - a few tracks in the mud, some wood shavings, and of course missing trees.

Join TreeUtah's Environmental Education Coordinator Owen Carroll at 7pm on Thursday June 23rd at Redwood Recreation Center (3060 S. Redwood Rd) to put together these clues and learn what critter is responsible for this dastardly deed!

News from the EcoGarden and Community Orchard

By Vaughn Lovejoy

It has been a busy spring at the Eco-Orchard. We have had the help of many wonderful volunteers, including 15 enthusiastic volunteers from Cephalon Corp. They provided an early start on

may ecogarden
May at the EcoGarden and Community Orchard

getting the weeds down late in April.

The paths have been mulched thanks to a wonderful Eagle Scout Project which took place on Saturday May 14th. Eagle Scout Manase Rorotoga and a party of nearly 40 good souls not only mulched the pathways but also did invaluable weeding and mowing. The mulch was picked up and delivered by Eric Freeman a star volunteer who has been an ongoing supporter of our work.

Many thanks to all of these helpers and the individuals too numberless to mention, who have helped make the EcoGarden and Community Orchard look beautiful this spring.
