Branching Out

  April 11th, 2011

Greetings!

A beautiful Austrian Pine growing next to the EcoGarden and Orchard
Spring has arrived and TreeUtah is in full swing for the tree planting season. March was a busy month -- we planted over 647 trees with the help of 200 plus volunteers!

April is going to be full of more tree planting fun with ten (10) planting events already scheduled! We are planning to plant 1,000 trees with volunteer groups including: REI, Swire Coca-Cola, the Young Presidents Organization, students at the Fremont Elementary School, and more!

Also, this month we have some great outdoor learning events such as a Lunch Time Tour of the EcoGarden and Orchard on April 13th, and a "Tree Frogs Sing" Nature Walk on April 25th.

We hope that you will join us in the great outdoors this April! Call us or register for Open Events online at www.treeutah.org.

Happy Planting,

I Spy
Sightings at the Redwood Nature Area

Owen Carroll, TU's Environmental Education Coordinator, reports on a wildlife sighting from last week.

"As I approached the Redwood Nature Area from the Redwood Rec Center trailhead, I saw three large birds flying about one-hundred feet above the Trees for Eagles Spiral.  My breath quickened as I hurried to get out my field glasses.  Sure enough, those large shapes turned out to be one of my favorite birds -- Sandhill Cranes!  They soared over me hardly flapping their wings at all and rose up into the air out of sight on a thermal.  I thought spring is finally here as I heard their distinct croaking call fall down from the sky."

Each week TreeUtah is conducting wildlife surveys along the Jordan River. If you enjoy bird watching, join us this month and witness the wonders of Spring migration. To learn how you can get involved contact Owen at

A Miracle of Fruit Trees

Children and Health

On March 22nd TreeUtah partnered with the Salt Lake Valley Health Department (SLVHD) and Parkside Elementary

Vaughn asks a group of 1st Graders to name their fruit tree

School to plant 12 fruit trees.  Two hundred and fifty students enthusiastically planted and named their trees. These young students promised to come back over the years to care for and watch the trees grow.

SLVHD's Environmental Health Specialist Pete Kuennemann, began last year with this visionary project to transform SLVHD's traditional landscaping of lawn into an Ecological Community Orchard. This orchard will provide a source of local and organic fruit to children and families within the neighborhood. TreeUtah looks forward to planting many more ecological community orchards like this throughout the state.
