The ARTreach Around the World Muralis a unique Arts-in-Education Project commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the Texas PTA. Stop by lobby of Tradition Bank located at 1515 Grand Parkway through May 30 and see the ARTreach World Mural. This incredible 14' mural is comprised of 60 individual panels created in ARTreach workshops held around the world. Professional artist Vickie McMillan from Katy, Texas designed the project and facilitated the workshops. The project engaged students from Africa, Asia, Mexico, and the United States and included Texas PTA members and students from across the state to make an artistic statement about our unique blend of cultures. The melting pot of America is represented in this mural by our children, parents and teachers across the world. Step back far enough and you will see a greater image emerge from the background of each unique panel- Look for our children's hands raising high inside the classroom- educated, bright, and inquisitive. Reaching to embrace a wonderful future for our world! A gift to the Texas PTA - making every child's potential a reality. This mural will be permanently installed at the Congress of Parents and Teacher State Offices in Austin, Texas. |

Utilizing a creative art-making process to help patients cope with long term illness This month several ARTreach workshops were hosted at the Aids Foundation of Houston, a residential center for women who are found to be HIV positive. A special project was facilitated by ARTreach roster artist Vickie McMillan with volunteers from Woodsedge Community Church. Vickie and the residents created "Thumbprint Art" - utilizing a creative art making process designed to help patients cope with long term illness. The project centered on hope and healing, and on each person's unique sense of purpose. The workshops were offered as three, two hour sessions with 16 different women participating. The women stitched their pieces together to create a single large thumbprint. "The project touched me", said volunteer Dawn Adams, "it focused on unifying the group and discovering the peace of mind that can be found within everyone's diverse life experiences. We all learned a lot about each other and ourselves." Two group "Thumbprint" paintings were created. One will be hung in the Lobby of the AIDS Foundation and the other at the Woodsedge Community Church. |
