Greetings!
According to a recent New York Times article by Pamela Paul, bullying is rampant in preschool and Kindergarten. I feel that bullying is not a "new" issue. Many years ago, I myself experienced the tortures of bullying as a young child. Gratefully, the media has put a spotlight on this issue, and the wounds of bullying have been brought into people's consciousness. The more children realize the effects of their words, actions, thoughts and feelings on themselves and others, the more hope we have in creating a human consciousness filled with a tolerance. As the saying goes...WE are the changes we want in the world. I passionately believe that early childhood is the key time to invest in the quality of a child's education, including the teaching of core character-building values and the development of a healthy self-esteem. Every children's concert, each award-winning CD, every song and story that I have written all embrace our mutual intention of building a generation that reinforces a healthy emotional and social IQ.

MY FAVORITE TEACHING TIPS, SONGS, SITES AND BOOKS
VIDEO: Interesting video on You Tube: "Kids for Character, Part I" (Tom Selleck focuses on character development in children, and has a section in the video that speaks to adults, and a section with children. It is over 9 minutes)
ARTICLE: New York Times article on Bullying by Pamela Paul (Pamela Paul writes powerfully, using specific examples about what is going on in Kindergarten and how bullying is beginning earlier in a child's life; Paul also writes about parenting issues in this article. This is a moving article that injected even more passion within me to do my part to help raise awareness in children on the power of their words and actions)

BOOK: Favorite Book on Preschool/K bullying issues: They Don't Like Me by Jane Katch (Jane Katch is a remarkable teacher who seeks to empower children. She shares her keen observations of the effects she has experienced in the classroom concerning bullying, and approaches she has used in helping children understand and shift their behaviors. The focus of the book is on early childhood bullying and teasing.) |
