The Collect for the 16th Sunday after Pentecost / Proper 19
O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Readings for September 23rd / The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost Jeremiah 11:18-20 Psalm 54 James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a Mark 9:30-37 Prayer For the Peoples of the Middle East Your kingdom come, O Lord, with deliverance for the needy, with peace for the righteous, with overflowing blessing for all nations, with glory, honor and praise for the One God and Father of us all. O God, lead us from death to life, from falsehood to truth. Lead us from despair to hope, from fear to trust. Lead us from hate to love, from war to peace. Let peace fill our hearts, our world, our universe. We pray this in the name of Jesus who comes as Prince of Peace to rule and reign in our hearts and lives. AMEN

Dear Friends, This has been a tumultuous week in our life as a nation. The remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy eleven years ago and the uprisings in the Middle East and especially in Libya where our ambassador and three of his staff were murdered should cause us all to stop, think and pray. The violence continues throughout the region with continued loss of life. Let us pray; for our nation, for comfort for those in grief, and for peace in the world. (there is prayer in the left column for your use)
At times like this I try to remember a few things... - this is a broken world and the ravages of sin are so apparent - our hope is in the Kingdom of God and the rule and reign of a righteous King; Jesus, the Prince of Peace - I am to be a conduit of God's love into this brokenness; from Sunday's Gospel lesson; the cross we bear for Christ is to give, serve and sacrifice longing for God's justice to be made tangible and real.
I do not know how we get through this season of conflict; I do not know how the wounds in our nation can be healed let alone the global wounds of war and suffering. However I do know that when I hope in Jesus, I am not disappointed. It reminds me of these verses from Romans 5:1-6...
"Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly." In the midst of conflict, of burdens we bear, of pain and suffering, of tragedy, of questions and doubts; Let us look to Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-3) He sustains us in all things!
in the mission,
Fr. Jon+
