 Dear Friends,

I have been reflecting on the call to follow Christ and how it should effect our behavior. (You can hear the sermon from Sunday -Click Here)  The lesson from Ephesians on Sunday (Click Here) challenges us to specific actions and character qualities as disciples of Jesus.  The collect for the week addresses this nicely (in the column on the left)

Given the "political season" we are in,  I was especially taken by these words... Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.
It seems the way folks get elected to public office is by employing malice, slander and wrangling.  The rhetoric is intense and hurtful. This is not true of every candidate there are honorable folks (both Republicans and Democrats) trying to do the right thing but they are up against a huge machine that has very little patience for manners.  We have lost a sense of good behavior in the public forum.  Whether it is the recent flurry in the media over Chik-Fil-A or campaign advertisements that make wild accusations we are ignoring these basic instructions and ultimately to... Walk in love as Christ loved us and gave himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God.  The Christian Life is not an easy one, it requires sacrifice, surrender and laying down my rights.   It may not be easy but I am convinced of at least two things: It is the best way to live and it's worth it.

Below is a prayer For an Election from the Book of Common Prayer p.822.  I commend it to you for the local primary election on Tuesday, August 14th and the days ahead and from now until November.

in the mission,
Fr. Jon+
Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States, the State of Florida, and this community in the election of officials and representatives;  that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
