Prayer for the week...
The Collect for the 8th Sunday after Pentecost / Proper 11
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Dear Friends,
I know we all have been shocked, stunned and grieving with the Aurora Colorado community in the wake of the massacre in the movie theater last week. It is so hard to make sense of this violent tragedy. I was with my good friend Dr. Dana Max in the aftermath of the Columbine Shooting in 1999. Dana arrived there in the first hours of that event and as psychologist and was there as a mental health professional in the community giving aid and comfort the the survivors and the victims. At that time I was leading diocesan youth ministry and the school shooting that culminating in Columbine were traumatic for young people everywhere.
On February 1, 2003, I was in the middle the diocesan gathering The Great Youth Celebration when word of the space shuttle Columbia explosion circulated via text and emails and phone calls through a crowd of 1000 young people many of whom lived on the "space coast". We took a moment to pray and to comfort one another in that national tragedy. These moments shake us to the core and can raise all sorts of questions.
I have learned from a good friend the need to have a theology of tragedy before tragedy strikes. To understand that in this fallen world there will be pain and suffering. Sometimes brought about by the evil intentions of people and other times simply "natural disasters" (Earthquakes / Hurricanes / Tsunamis / Wild Fires) in all of these we have an invitation...
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not upon your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 My limited understanding, my finite view of the world will not satisfy my mind or heart. Faith must rise up in a God who is all loving and all powerful and who will somehow work this for good. I do not know how and I am not trying to answer the looming question "Why?". I have found in the midst of pain, sorrow, loss, tragedies and more that the comfort of the Almighty God will see me through. He is my fortress, my strong rock, my refuge and my hope. When I trust Him in all things - with all that I am, I find guidance and provision; hope and comfort for the road ahead.
May Almighty God find us trusting Him in all things and...
