 Dear Friends,
What a rich weekend and especially Sunday services as we were blessed with the ministry of The Rt. Rev. Alden Hathaway. Bishop Hathaway was at Canterbury on Friday and Saturday leading a retreat on leadership in the church as seen through two saints Nehemiah and Charles Simeon and his reflections were profound.
On Sunday his preaching and presence among us was filled with the Holy Spirit and I commend his sermon to you (Click Here). Over the years as I have had opportunity to be with some of the "giants" and modern day "patriarchs" of the church. If given the opportunity I will ask for them to pray a prayer of blessing on me and my ministry. This may sound selfish or egocentric. I see it rather as a desire to receive all that God has for me. On Sunday, Bishop Hathaway offered his "apostolic" blessing on any and all of Incarnation. (from what I saw it close to all that came forward) Tears filled my eyes as this congregation I love so dearly received this gift from a modern day saint and champion of the faith.
A couple of years ago I was privileged to be at the Father's of the Faith conference at The COVE - The Billy Graham Training Center in Ashveille, North Carolina. One of the "fathers" shared how at this point in his life all he wanted to do was "bless" people in the name of the Lord. Blessing is a powerful means of grace in this world and we have every reason to share blessing with people throughout each day.
This week as you gather around tables for feasts and fellowship, to give thanks to Almighty God for His goodness and loving-kindness. Bless one another, say a prayer over the food, yes; but more so over each other letting the love of God fill your life and those you love. This may have been a year of difficulties, financial struggles, hardships, illness or other calamity. The book of Lamentations is just that, a lament over the desperate situation in Jerusalem after most have been carried off into the Babylonian exile. People are being terrorized, there is famine, disease and looming threat each day. In the midst of this situation, sandwiched among all this distress we find these powerful (probably familiar) words...
"But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The LORD is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."" (Lamentations 3:21-24)
One of my favorite Thanksgiving quotes...
H. W. Westermayer writes... The pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts... nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving. Let us with Joy and Thanksgiving acknowledge and call to mind the goodness, grace, mercy, kindness, compassion forgiveness, faithfulness, redemption and salvation, the very love of Almighty God poured out to us by the Holy Spirit in of person and work of Jesus.
Join us Thursday morning at 10am for the Incarnation Thanksgiving service!
in the mission of the Kingdom, Fr. Jon
* And yes in this stewardship season please be prayerful as to what you are to contribute financially to mission / ministry of Incarnation. Pledge Cards are available on the back table at the chapel or you can contact Shelly and she can email you a form. (shelly@incarnationoviedo.com).
