Dear Friends,

I am on my annual trek to the mountains of western North Carolina. I have been in a hermitage at Valle Crucis Conference Center ( a place where our youth group has gone on retreat and I have brought hundreds of folks here over the years). The Hermitage is a new addition to the campus and I am finding it to be a perfect place to be still, reflect and most of all work on my dissertation. I am keenly interested in this as I hope that Canterbury will someday have a Hermitage of its own. I have taken several hikes through the woods, (much easier not carrying the extra person I use to). The picture above is from one of my hikes to a waterfall deep in the Pisgah National Forest. In this solitude I have prayed, worshiped, reflected. The air has been crisp and cool and I feel like this has been the most productive and renewing experiences I've had in awhile. I say that not to brag or make you envious but to simply say we need to heed the advice of the Apostle Paul in his words to "son in the faith" Timothy.

"Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things; for as you do this you will insure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you." (1Timothy 4:16 NASB)

This comes in a series of instruction in 1 Timothy 4 concerning ministry and conduct. I am taken by "pay attention to yourself". I know in this fast paced world in which we live it becomes easy to neglect essentials. I encourage you and myself to take time to look at ourselves, our relationship with God and to reflect on belonging to Jesus, being in Christ; knowing Him more and more each day and to offer ourselves in service to His Kingdom and to think about our role as a member of His Body, the church. In this season of "stewardship" it is well worth pondering. This is our calling and what the Great Commandment and the Great Commission looks like in the life of a believer. May God lead us and bless us...
