Dear Friends,
In June with Father's Day and my mother's birthday was June 13 I am thinking about my own parents and especially my "Dad" and the gifts he gave me as his son. Here is a picture of my Mom and Dad shortly after they were married in 1945...

Lieutenant June L. Davis and Captain Millard Q. Davis
My parents served during WWII. Mom was an army nurse and served in an EVAC hospital near London treating casualties from the European theater. Dad was an infantry officer, served under General Patton in North Africa and later was part of the forces that liberated Rome, Italy. Dad was a decorated several times over including the Silver Star, Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts. They were both "heroes" in my eyes.
I commented recently in a sermon that my inheritance from my mom and dad was not about family heirlooms or wealth but more so about what my parents passed on to me in terms of character, integrity, honesty, and love. These virtues and more are what I gained from being the son of "MQ" and June Davis. For that I am eternally grateful.
I would encourage you this day to pause and give thanks for your parents and whether they are alive or if they have "entered the nearer presence of Christ". Find a way to honor them and to express your gratitude for the simple fact that they gave you life. I know some relationships have been damaged, some very painful and even broken but may God bring healing, forgiveness and reconciliation by His grace and mercy.
Almighty God our Heavenly Father, in
your wisdom and love you made all things. We
give thanks for parents, who have given us life and love, that we may
show them
love and affection today and all days by the way in which we live our
lives. Bless our families that they may be a
strength to us in trouble, a joy to us in life, a place of refuge in this world
and an image of our relationship with you having been adopted into your family
as sons and daughters. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen
In the mission,
Fr. Jon+
