Dear Friends, I have shared this with a number of folks but wanted to take time to share it in this format. Years ago as a part of a pastoral leadership course I took in seminary I had to read the book "Margin" by Richard Swenson (You can get it at Amazon - Click here) The premise is quite simple we need MARGIN in our lives to be healthy, fruitful and productive. Instead we are often told to give 110% or more leaving no room for our lives. Without margin we run the race. For a time it may appear we are in the lead but in the end we lose. In this busy, hectic and anxious world we often get caught in the trap of no margin, no space to be. This brings us down. I realized I have been living without much margin in my own life over the past few months as I have taken this dual role as Executive Director of Canterbury and still Vicar at Incarnation. I have found in my own life that for a season we might be called to live full throttle. I took on Canterbury knowing this would be the case. I can rejoice in knowing that margin is returning to my life and soon it will be a different season, one where the pace slows a bit, where I am working smarter and help increases.
What is difficult in harried seasons is that we tend to run off our batteries. We do not do the things necessary to keep us charged up. It is my relationship with Christ Jesus that gives me the energy to do the tasks at hand and I must continue to nurture that relationship in prayer, study, fellowship and more. It is choosing to be Mary instead of Martha...
"Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."" (Luke 10:38-42)
Are you busy? ...harassed? ...anxious? ...no time? ...no margin? Believe me the answer to your pace is not to do more, get more organized or to take a course on time management. The answer is to stop, take a breath and sit at the feet of Jesus, listen to his voice, hear his words and bask in the joy of His presence. Trust me you will be better for doing so. I know I am!
One more thing...I came across this quote from Robert Webber in his book Ancient Future Time...
"Every Sunday of the year is a celebration
of the Easter Event. The work of the people in "doing the Christ event"
through memory and hope is the source for personal & corporate
formation into resurrection spirituality."
Another way to sit at the feet of Jesus is to do so corporately with the church - to actively participate in the Ministry of the Word and the Ministry of the Sacrament. Come and be refreshed this Sunday!
In the
mission,
Fr. Jon+
