Collect for the weekAlmighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you
know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have
compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which
for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask;
through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. ++++++++++++++++ Readings for Sunday, July 26th / Proper 12 2 Samuel 11:1-15

Following General Convention
|
Dear Friends,
Below is the statement I read in Church regarding General Convention's resolutions and actions...
The Episcopal Church made headlines this week at its every three year General Convention. During the convention by wide and overwhelming margins approved two resolutions: Resolution D025 - to asserts that all persons, including those in same-sex relationships, which the resolution characterized as "holy love", are eligible for any office in the church, including that of Bishop. Resolution C056 - charged the Standing Commission on Liturgy & Music to collect & develop liturgies for same-sex marriage and blessings, and invites parishes and dioceses to perform them in a kind of trial use.
Both of these are a departure from traditional Christian, biblical teaching, faith & practice - that those intimate relationships are reserved for Holy Matrimony between a man and woman. The Church is built upon the teaching of Christ and His Apostles, left to us in the New Testament, as well as upon the writings of the early Church Fathers. This sacred teaching includes a Christian ethic of marriage, family life, and sexuality. We do not believe the church has the authority to alter these teachings. I also wish to assure those who disagree with us, or who are gay or lesbian, or may have loved ones that are; that we will maintain a culture of love and tolerance for all who differ. All are welcome at Incarnation. But here at least, the clear teachings of the Holy Scriptures are not up for a vote.
There was other work done at General Convention, good work on a variety of mission initiatives / addressing the environmental and economic crises of our day and more; but these two items will gather all the attention and press in the days ahead. These two resolutions are not mandatory but rather will vary on their implementation from diocese to diocese. For us Florida State Law does not recognize same sex unions as marriage. More so because of our Bishop and our diocesan canons, which govern us - these things will not happen in the Diocese of Central Florida or at Church of the Incarnation.
We are about proclaiming the Gospel - A Gospel that begins with the first words from Jesus' ministry being REPENT. There is evil & sin in this world and we are called to be transformed by grace, to be like Christ himself in our words and deeds. We are called to be holy and righteous which means laying aside ungodly desires and lust. We are called to be a people filled with the love of God - love for Father, Son and Holy Spirit and love for each other - filled with compassion for those who find themselves in need of a savior just like us.
With the departure of thousands of conservative minded folks on a national level from our church and four dioceses and their conservative deputations we should not be surprised by these actions of General Convention. Our deputation from the Diocese of Central Florida represented us well and spoke up for the Gospel and engaged on all of these debates - we owe them our gratitude. You can hear them directly at the Cathedral next Sunday, July 26th at 2pm for a General Convention Debriefing.
What does this mean for us... Right now nothing. These things will not happen in Central Florida under our current leadership and canons. I say to you as Vicar of Church of the Incarnation they will not happen here as they are in opposition to the faith once received.
There are other developments that may have some effect in terms of how the Archbishop of Canterbury & the Anglican Communion will respond to these actions - which violate basically every instrument of unity and authority in the Anglican Communion: The Lambeth Conference; the Windsor Report; the proposed Anglican Covenant; the Primate's Statement of Dar es Salaam. There are links to articles in the Green Column that I have found helpful in this calamity.
So again, what does this mean for us? We keep on proclaiming in love the Good News of Jesus, redemption through faith and repentance, rescue and deliverance in the cross where our salvation was won. We keep loving each other in Christian community and we reach out in hope to people in a world marred by sin. We live the Kingdom of God - here in this place where all people are invited to taste and see the goodness of God.
I will be glad to speak to any of you personally about concerns or questions you may have for the church please feel free to set an appointment with me.
