Collect for the week
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Prayer and Praise
June 24th at the Mission House / 6pm
Join us for supper and a great evening of worship, teaching and Eucharist, with a program for children and nursery provided. We welcome the Rev. Dr. Reggie Kidd / Professor of New Testament at RTS and a great friend and a dynamic speaker.  More details soon.
Dear Friends,

I am sitting here on Monday morning, Memorial Day and am so grateful for the men and women who gave their lives for the defense of this nation.  For those who took an oath, wore the uniform of their country and swore to protect and defend us from all enemies we owe our gratitude.

I have used this in sermons (I did so on Ascension Day) and find it very moving when I think of the allegiances we have as citizens of this nation but also as citizens of the Kingdom of God. Though it comes from another country the ideals expressed resonate in my heart this dual sense of duty and obligation I feel...

The Welsh National Anthem is a hymn of rare beauty. It was sung at both Princess Diana's wedding and her funeral. Here are lyrics that are all but unknown in our country, but which provide a rich vocabulary for contemplating what it means to pledge our lives...

I vow to thee my country, all earthly things above.
Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love.
The love that asks no question,
the love that stands the test.
That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best.
The love that never falters,
the love that pays the price.

The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.

And there's another country, I've heard of long ago
most dear to them that love her,
most great to them that know.
We may not count her armies,
we may not see her King

her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering.
And soul by soul and silently,
     her shining bounds increase

and her ways are ways of gentleness
and all her paths are peace.

From the Book of Common Prayer...
O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

An opportunity to go deeper...
Carolyn Custis James will be leading a retreat at Canterbury June 5 & 6 (details in the column.  The Topic is "When Life and Beliefs Collide" from one of her excellent books. I commend this to all of you as a means of spiritual growth.

A few worship notes...
This coming Sunday is Pentecost Sunday and it is traditional to wear RED - the liturgical color of the day.

This Sunday is also Thomas Buchan's first Sunday as a Deacon. There will be a reception following the service & we will be taking a special offering for his discretionary fund to help get necessary "clergy items" for his ministry. (an invitation to Thomas' ordination is in the column)

This being the last Sunday of the month we will be collecting food for the Oviedo Food Bank.  Please bring
non-perishable food items.

On the last Sunday of each month cash given in the offering goes to the Vicar's  discretionary fund - this fund helps people in the community that are in need.

This Sunday will be the last Sunday for Christian Formation Classes until the Fall.

Living where blessings abound!
