Holy Week...
|
|
Dear Friends,
In my reading and study I came across this remarkable quote by Dr. J.I. Packer from his classic book Knowing God...
The Christmas message is that there is hope for a ruined humanity-hope of pardon, hope of peace with God, hope of glory-because at the Father's will Jesus Christ became poor and was born in a stable so that thirty years later he might hang on a cross.
I am reminded of Rev. Sarah's sermon yesterday and the Descent of Jesus from "glory" to human likeness, to a slave, to death, even death upon a cross. (Phil. 2)
I am so glad, filled with joy that Jesus came, more so for the reason of his coming - to redeem humanity from the penalty of sin and save us from death and destruction. In surveying the theological landscape there is a shift away from this idea, from the atonement and redemption offered in the cross. There is a tendency to think that humanity is not really all that bad or as evil as we might dare to think. With the headlines of the last week, a massacre in Binghamton NY; a man killing his five children and then himself in Washington state. From violence, to greed, to hatred, to lust, the news agencies thrive on the depravity of humanity, offering commentary but no solutions.
There is but one way of salvation, one path to redemption and it is a journey to a cross, where Jesus offered himself for you and me, to rescue us from sin and death. This week more than any other in the year offers us an opportunity to draw close to these might acts of God's intervention into human history, to witness by faith what Jesus Christ accomplished for us. Linger with the community of faith gathered this week as we actively remember the Passion of Jesus... savoring the Last Supper, into the garden, through the pain and suffering, to a cross and on Sunday morning behold resurrected life! The schedule is below and offers a variety of opportunity to enter more deeply and contemplate more fully the work of salvation we find in Christ alone.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5
