COLLECT FOR THE WEEK
O God, who before the passion of your
only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to
us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be
strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from
glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
for Ash Wednesday Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing
you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and
make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our
sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of
all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for
ever and ever. Amen. ********************* Readings for March 1, The 1st Sunday in Lent Genesis 9:8-17

A Lenten Journey begins...
|
|
Dear Friends,
I returned from a week of personal retreat in the "High Country" of North Carolina. It was a productive time of study and prayer yet I am so glad to be home.
I arrived to a tremendous PANCAKE SUPPER at the mission house last night. The youth group did a tremendous job and thanks to your generosity raised a whopping $450+ (after expenses). Rev. Sarah led a litany of "burying the Alleluias" and it was a great time of fellowship and what a way to be welcomed back!
My time away could be compared to "changing gears". It was a very different environment: frigid temps; snowfall; fires burning in the fireplace; barren trees; all reminders of the pleasure of spending most of winter in central Florida.
This week we change gears in our church calendar, today on Ash Wednesday. As we enter Lent, things will look different and be different in our worship. I hope this will make us consider afresh our relationship with Christ and what we can do to know Him more. These days offer an intentional journey or path for us to walk. We begin as Robert Webber calls it; A Cycle of Life. This cycle will take us from pondering the ministry of Jesus, his great passion and into his very death - entering the tomb with Christ on Good Friday evening and awaiting our hope in resurrection on Easter morning. I learned long ago that a good Lent makes for a great Easter. That is to say, when we enter intentionally into the mysteries of our redemption and contemplate the life and work of Jesus by acts of piety; Easter becomes a more tactile and tangible experience of His power to redeem and reconcile and make new.
The expedition begins (again) today on Ash Wednesday, (you can still make the 7pm service tonight) pack your bags and get on board!
Peace and Grace, Jon+ / Vicar

Lenten Class on Prayer (for youth and adults)
Brother Lawrence wrote:
"There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful
than that of a continual conversation with God."
Join in this Lenten season and discover this truth. Father Jon will be teaching a class on prayer on the Sundays in Lent. (9-10am in the bookstore) Join us for a helpful look at this essential discipline of the Christian life.

Kingdom Prayer
As we think about the ministry of prayer the following quote from Sidlow Baxter might inspire us...
"Men may spurn our appeals, reject our message,
oppose our arguments, despise our persons, but they are helpless against our
prayers."
Join in a weekly prayer meeting in Lent on Wednesday evenings, 7:30pm at the Mission House. (beginning March 4th) We anticipate the prayer meeting will last no more than an hour. We will pray for: the world, our nation, the community: our church, diocese, province and communion; for personal needs and more. This is an opportunity to go deeper in faith and to strengthen your relationship with God. If you have questions contact Father Jon - jon@incarnationoviedo.com .
