New Executive Director Named for
Table Rock Lake Water Quality
David Casaletto
The Table Rock Lake Water Quality (TRLWQ) Board of Trustees on Thursday, January 6, 2011 announced the promotion of Gopala Borchelt to the position of Executive Director of Table Rock Lake Water Quality.
Almost 5 years ago, on March 6, 2006, Ozarks Water Watch (then known as the Upper White River Basin Foundation) sponsored a Water Quality Summit at the Radisson Hotel in Branson, MO. The summit was part of the Targeted Watershed Grant that had been awarded to Ozarks Water Watch by the Environmental Protection Agency. At that time I was the executive director of Table Rock Lake Water Quality. I had been invited to attend and participate in the summit. I remember I had set up the TRLWQ display booth in the exhibition hall. On Thursday evening I was with many of the attendees talking in the hallway when Debbie Redford, who at that time was the environmental specialist for the City of Branson, introduced me to a young woman. Debbie told me the woman was a graduate student in the Geospatial Science Program at Missouri State University. And in fact, her advisor, Robert T. Pavlowsky, was giving a presentation entitled Baseline Water Quality Monitoring Study for the Upper White River Basin Project, Missouri and Arkansas 2005-2006. The presentation was prepared by Missouri State University for the Upper White River Basin Foundation and was based on this woman's master's thesis. The woman's name was Gopala Borchelt.

At that time in March of 2006, my Projects Director, Gail Kendall, had let me know of her intension to retire and I was on the lookout for her replacement. I remember asking Gopala what her plans were after her graduation from Missouri State. She told me that she had not yet made any decisions. In the days following, I became more and more convinced that Gopala would be the right person as Projects Director so I contacted her and set up a meeting. And as you can guess, Gopala accepted the position and started with TRLWQ part-time in May 2006 going full-time in August.
I have asked Gopala to share her thoughts:
I have always been fascinated by the natural world. I often spent more hours outside in the forest or on a stream or lake than I did indoors as a child. Our family was not wealthy and often struggled to buy the 5 children footwear, but our wealth was in closeness and a close connection to nature and its creator. A personal wish of mine is that every child gets an opportunity to connect with a natural environment because I feel it awakens an inner spirit of adventure and wonder that is so appealing it compels the person to value and protect natural places throughout life.
I attended College of the Ozarks from 1999 to 2002 where I studied Agriculture, Horticulture and Art. I also worked in the greenhouses planting and raising the many flowers and shrubs for their exquisite campus grounds. While volunteering for the Table Rock Lake U. S. Army Corps of Engineers on park utilities mapping I was able to connect with the masters degree program on Geospatial Sciences at Missouri State University. I was accepted to the program and completed my thesis on water quality inthe Upper White River Basin (Missouri and Arkansas). I traveled monthly to 19 sites along all of the major tributaries of the Upper White River including the James River, Bull Creek, Beaver Creek, White River near Fayetteville, Kings River, Long Creek, Yocum Creek, etc. and collected water samples for testing. These tests were for nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations and general water chemistry. I compared the water test results to land use within each watershed to paint a picture of how water quality is affected by land use.
Since I was already working in the water quality-related field it was not a coincidence that I ended up taking a job with Table Rock Lake Water Quality in August 2006. Since then our office has grown from two employees to four as our projects and opportunities have expanded. I am very excited to continue working for Table Rock Lake Water Quality inc. in this new capacity. It is said that if you love your work then it's not really work at all. I thoroughly enjoy working with the staff of TRLWQ and am very thankful for continued guidance from Mr. Casaletto as well as that of our dedicated and knowledgeable board of trustees.
I would like to be one of the first to congratulate Gopala on her new position. I look forward to working with her to protect the waters of the Table Rock Lake and the Upper White River Basin watersheds. I am excited that the Board of Table Rock Lake Water Quality and Ozarks Water Watch have agreed to work closely together to achieve their common water quality goals.

Quote of the Week
Like water, be gentle and strong. Be gentle enough to follow the natural paths of the earth, and strong enough to rise up and reshape the world.

Threatened lakes need help
News-Leader, Springfield, MO, January 7, 2011
An effort is under way to plan for protecting the area's watersheds.
This is not the season to be giving a lot of thought to lakes. Usually, the beckoning bodies of aquamarine start getting everyone's attention around Memorial Day.
Some concerned area residents, though, have been thinking and talking a lot about Table Rock Lake over the past few months. They'll be doing hours and hours of additional volunteer work, too, in an effort worth the attention of anyone who cares about this popular regional waterway. More....
