The Retirement Pyramid

Food and finance finally have something in common.  The Insured Retirement Institute (www.irionline.org) recently created a Retirement Income Pyramid which depicts what type of assets your income during Retirement should come from, similar to the Food Pyramid developed by the US Department of Agriculture which exhibits what a balanced diet looks like.

Retirement Pyramid

On the base of the Retirement Pyramid are guaranteed sources of incomes (Social Security Benefits, Pensions, and Annuities).  These assets provide a steady stream of income during your retirement and in the case of Social Security, that income stream will increase with the rise of inflation

The next level consists of your Long-Term Assets such as Real Estate, 401ks, IRAs, and Annuities.  Here you mostly have tax-advantaged assets that the longer you can keep money in these types of accounts the bigger the tax benefit you can receive.  Real Estate should not be considered an income source in retirement unless it is either a rental property or if you plan on downsizing your primary residence and use the proceeds to generate income.

The third level consists of the different types of insurance.  One of the biggest differences in expenses from pre-retirement to retirement is the rise in Medical Expenses.

The top of the pyramid consists of your Investments, which are important for the income they can generate.  A lot of people try to avoid the risks associated with Funds, Stocks, and Bonds, however with retirements lasting up to 40 years, there can be enough time to take on the risk of these investments which bring additional return.

BRIC or BIC
Investing in Emerging Markets

Using acronyms to describe different groups of countries is popular in the financial industry.  You have the acronym PIIGS to represent Portugal, Italy,RussiaIreland, Greece, and Spain.   Unfortunately these countries got pigeon toed into an acronym for having concerns of their sovereign debt.

The more common acronym over the past couple of years has been BRIC, representing Brazil, Russia, India, and China.  These are four emerging market countries who have experienced rapid economic growth over the past couple of years.  The question is whether Russia still belongs in the same group with the other three.

China is expecting to keep up their double digit growth for the foreseeable future (The US is expected to grow at 2-3%).  Brazil has gotten their currency and inflation issues under control and has a enormous amount of natural resources that they are sitting on.

Russia, on the other hand is the only one of the four who has seen their GDP drop (7.9%) in 2009.  Russia's economy has a high dependence on commodities (specifically oil) and the recession over the past two years really hit the economy hard.  You can find corruption anywhere, but the rampant corruption in Russia can be one of the reasons that Russia attracts one-fifth the foreign investment that Brazil and China does and half of what India receives.

There are some signs of optimism for Russia.  If the prices of oil and natural gas continue to rise, the country could be poised for a steady recovery over the next couple of years.

Other emerging market countries that are getting a lot of publicity now are Turkey, Indonesia, and even Israel.  One cause of caution with emerging markets is that if their economies and the global economies are doing well their stocks soar, but once things go sour, they are often the fastest equity investments to fall.

FREE Social Security Planning Workshops

The March 30th workshop held at the Lyndhurst Public Library was a success with over 30 people in attendance!  Many of the attendees questions focused on the implications of working while collecting their benefits as well as how to coordinate spousal benefits. If you did not make it on March 27th, good news, there is another coming up at the end of this month!

The next seminar will be held on Tuesday April 27 @ 7pm.  Details of the workshop and instructions on how to register are below.

  • 5 factors to consider when deciding when to apply for benefits
  • When it makes sense to delay benefits -- and when it does not
  • Why you should always check your earnings record for accuracy
  • How to estimate your benefits
  • How to coordinate benefits with your spouse
  • How to minimize taxes on Social Security benefits
  • How to coordinate Social Security with your other sources of retirement income

The decisions baby boomers make now can have a tremendous impact on the total amount of benefits they stand to receive over their lifetime.

On Sunday, May 16, 2010, from 10am to 5pm, Bautis Financial will participate in the Hasbrouck Heights Street Fair for the second year in a row.  Last May an estimated 15,000 folks enjoyed the Hasbrouck Heights Street Fair on The Boulevard.  Two stages featured live entertainment and a DJ and included performances by Hasbrouck Heights' own Ashley Hollister, an American Idol 2009 finalist, and Bill Turner and Elvis Tribute band, Blue Smoke Band, starring Anthony Liguori.

Expect to see again fun activities for kids like inflatables, rock climbing tower, trackless train, bungee trampoline as well as face painting .  A mime and costumed characters delighted the youngsters as well.  Come hungry for festival food like cotton candy, hot dogs, pizza, sausage & peppers, ice cream and more!
