WHAT IS THE TRUTH ABOUT BREAST CANCER RATES?
breast cancer rib

I just read a NY Times review on a fascinating new book: BREASTS: A Natural and Unnatural History

by Florence Williams.

The review describes an interesting take on the female (and male) breasts,  both historically and medically, but the review makes the claim that 'the breast cancer incidence continues to rise,' and this caught my attention.

Why?

Because I thought that despite the awareness about breast cancer, all the magazine articles, talk shows, and just plain people talking about it....the fact is that breast cancer is in decline. So which is it? Is breast cancer increasing or decreasing?

Well, in the US, breast cancer is declining, down about 14% since 1990. Of course, there is much more to that statistical detail, and if you are interested read the NIH fact sheet:
 http://report.nih.gov/nihfactsheets/ViewFactSheet.aspx?csid=73

So....breast cancer remains the preeminent cancer in women due to it's incidence and scope, but let's make sure we keep our facts straight and take some strength in knowing that breast cancer, at least in the US, is in decline.

Yours in good health,
Dr. Lakin

The Power of Walking. . . . . . .
   Running Shoes
If it seems as if more people are hoofing it for their health, it's true. More than 145 million Americans count walking as part of their physical activity, according to a report last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's 15 million more people walking than in 2005. All regions of the country reported an increase in walking, but the most walkers were found in the Northeast and West, home to walk-able urban centers such as New York City and Los Angeles.

But despite the increase in footfalls, only about 48% of Americans report they meet the recommendation of at least 2½ hours of moderate physical activity a week, according to the report. Our increasingly sedentary lifestyle has another downside: a greater risk of chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure that threatens our longevity.

Walking requires little other than a pair of shoes and can fit in the busiest of schedules. Just 30 minutes of regular brisk walking - about the pace if you are trying to reach a bus before it pulls away - can help lower your cholesterol, risk of stroke and some cancers, and it can improve your cognitive function and blood pressure. If 30 minutes is too much, consider breaking it up into three 10-minute chunks during the day for the same benefits.

And you don't have to be a super-athlete to reap the benefits. Physician Michael Joyner, an anesthesiologist and specialist in exercise science with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., says some of the biggest health winners are couch potatoes who transition from being totally sedentary to moderately active.

Tips to keep you moving

» Skip the e-mail at work. Go talk to the source. You'll put those leg muscles to use, and you may earn some valuable face time.
» Drink water - lots of it. First, you'll have to get up more for associated bathroom breaks and second, you'll keep yourself hydrated through the day.
» Set yourself a reminder. Program your cellphone to alert you to get up every half-hour or hour to stretch or walk around.
» Rethink your lunch break. If possible, start your workday earlier so you can take a longer lunch. Use the time to take a walk, work out or just get away.
» Relocate office supplies. Move the location ofyour printer or fax machine to make yourself get up from your desk.
» Go high-tech. Body monitoring devices like fitbit, the Basis Band and the BodyMedia FIT clip, clasp or strap on, to give you readouts on steps, miles, calories and more.
» Grab 'n' go shoes. Keep a pair of sneakers at your desk to "sneak" in occasional 15-minute power walks.
» Skip the easy route. Take the stairs at least once a day for a leg-toner.
» Maps & apps. Smartphone apps such as Walkmeter and MapMyWalk help you keep track of routes, speed and distance. You can post results on Facebook and Twitter.
» Meet your match. Find walking clubs by state at the American Volkssport Association, ava.org.

Let's walk our way to a healthier lifestyle!

Is It Asthma? Or Allergies?. . . . . .

The Doctors They can make you miserable - that's one thing allergies and asthma have in common. The two often occur together: Almost 19 million adults in the USA have asthma, statistics show, and more than half have the type that's induced by allergies. That means the ragweed pollen that's currently sending some people's seasonal allergies into overdrive, for example, can also lead to asthma symptoms.

But while allergens are at the root of all allergic reactions, the same is not true for asthma. Allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to certain substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, particular foods or bug bites. Asthma attacks can be triggered by different factors, such as stress, exercise or cold weather.

Here are three more ways they differ: Lungs

Asthma affects only the airways. Regardless of the trigger, the resulting attack is the same: an inflammation and narrowing of air passages, which reduces airflow to the lungs. The location of an allergic reaction depends on the allergen. If it's airborne and inhaled (like mold spores), it most likely will affect the eyes, nose and lungs. If it's ingested, it may affect your mouth or stomach; a bug bite or latex allergy could cause a skin reaction.

One wheezes; the other sneezes. The four hallmarks of asthma are chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing and a squeaky exhale called wheezing. Allergy symptoms vary: Hay fever, for example, is characterized by congestion, sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Reactions to food may include a tingling mouth, swollen lips or tongue, and nausea; bug bite allergies can cause hives and swelling.

Asthma requires control. It's a chronic condition with no cure, so treatment focuses on control. But for people who experience asthma symptoms more than twice a week, daily controller medications are necessary. Surprisingly, a recent survey of 1,000 asthma sufferers found that about half of people with persistent asthma are not using controller meds. Poor asthma control reduces quality of life and raises your risk of complications. For allergies, focus on prevention: Your doctor can help you identify and avoid triggers, and that may be enough to prevent allergic reactions. For more severe symptoms, medications and allergy shots are also available.

Learn the triggers and symptoms for both.

Seasonal Influenza:
Have You Scheduled Your Flu Vaccine With Us Yet?
upset stomach
Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

The upcoming season's flu vaccine will protect against the three influenza viruses that research indicates will be most common during the season. This includes an influenza A (H1N1) virus, an influenza A (H3N2) virus, and an influenza B virus.

Yearly flu vaccination begins in September, or as soon as vaccine is available, and continue throughout the flu season which can last as late as May. This is because the timing and duration of flu seasons vary. While flu season can begin early as October, most of the time seasonal flu activity peaks in January, February or later.

Call our office to schedule for your flu vaccine today!

Can't Make a Decision?
This May Be Why. . .
. . .

guy producer With all the decisions you make in a day, decision fatigue can hit you pretty quickly. You may make poor choices or feel overwhelmed. "It takes mental energy to do things in life," says psychologist Kathleen Vohs, professor of marketing at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. "When you make a bunch of decisions, it zaps some of that energy."

Embrace these tips to keep your selection process running smoothly:

Stick to the familiar. Picking a default eliminates the need to make a decision, Vohs says. Order the same drink at Starbucks each morning, but allow yourself a different drink for special occasions.

Ask for a little help. Have a trusted family member or friend make decisions for you, such as choosing a meal plan for the week or scheduling outings for the weekend, Vohs suggests.

Go back to nature. Feeling fatigued before the 4 p.m. meeting? Take a look out the window or make your screen saver show mountains or corn fields.

Build Better Bone Strength. . . . .

Running couple The effects of weak bones are tough to miss: As osteoporosis sets in, bones can become so brittle that a minor bump or strain can cause a fracture, back pain or loss of height. About 34 million Americans are at risk for osteoporosis, the National Osteoporosis Foundation says.

These four steps can help protect your bones:
Get calcium and vitamin D. Calcium is the building block of bones, and vitamin D helps your body absorb it. Calcium-rich foods include low-fat dairy and foods fortified with calcium. For vitamin D, try fatty fish such as salmon and tuna.

Walk fast and lift weights. Bones get stronger and denser the more you make them work. Combine weight-bearing and strength-training exercises to help build and maintain bone density. Along with walking, other good weight-bearing workouts include jogging, tennis and dancing - aim for 30 minutes on most days. Strength training should be done two to three days a week, and could include workouts with exercise bands or weight machines . Before starting any exercise program, check with your doctor.

Stop smoking and drink less alcohol. The chemicals in cigarettes are bad for bone cells. Also, more than one alcoholic beverage a day may decrease bone formation.

Test your bone strength. The most common way is with a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), a quick procedure that painlessly measures the density of bones in your spine, hip and wrist.

+ + + + +  THE INTOUCHABLES

I saw this movie by myself because none of my friends will go to a sub titled film. It was in French, and I love that. What a lovely film. A wealthy man of French nobility is paralyzed from the neck down because of an accident while hand gliding. This is where the movie starts. At the beginning, the man is interviewing men to be his caretaker. He selects a huge black man - a muslim- who is just out of jail. The two enter a relationship with lots of drama and comedy. It is so very touching especially when you realize that this is a true story. This is one of my favorite films of all times.

+ + + + MOONRISE KINGDOM

I really wasn't too excited to see this, but I read somewhere that it was the "sleeper of the summer". I feel it got off to a slow start, but pretty soon I was really involved. If you can understand this: I felt as if I was there looking at Suzy and Sam from the outside. Usually I feel inside the film. It was like when you were little and playing with your doll house.....What a cast. Bruce Willis, Bill Murry, Frances McDormand, and two adorable school children. It is a labor of love about young love. See it.

 + + + + TO ROME WITH LOVE

Well, as you know, Barbara A never misses a Woody Allen movie. This was not his best, but thoroughly worth every minute. It has 4 different plots going at once and this time Woody is in the movie. He is a riot...Alec Baldwin is part of one of the stories but goes in and out invisibly in the other three plots. Woody plays a really negative man in the film. He is a hoot. He discovers a man with a voice that should sing opera. Unfortunately he can only sing in the shower. It is hilarious. If you need a good belly laugh - go. The scenes of Rome are lovely as is the Italian love song Volare which you hear throughout the film.

+ + + + YOUR SISTER'S SISTER  I really enjoyed this film. I really didn't know much about it, but was entertained the whole time. I am wondering if it was once a play since there are essentially only three people in the film. The actors are Mark Duplass, Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt. Jack (Mark Duplass) is offered a getaway to Puget Sound to pull himself together after his brother's death. His best friend, Iris, thinks the solitude of the island will allow him to regroup. When he arrives, he unexpectedly is surprised to find Iris' sister there - Hannah, who is trying to get her life back in order after a breakup with her lesbian partner. Suddenly, Iris shows up and what follows is great. I don't want to spoil the substance of the movie so I will leave you here and hope you go to find out what happens.

+ + TAKE THIS WALTZ    When this movie was over, I looked at my friend Joan and said "Will you explain this film to me?"  She said, "I was just going to ask you." I just couldn't get into this story. Every one agrees I am sure that Michelle Williams and Seth Rogan are the absolute best. They were in this too, however even Michelle Williams looks uncomfortable playing this part. She plays a loathsome, timid, indecisive and childlike woman. There is a point near the end of the movie that should have ended the story, but it kept going. Oh dear, I am sorry I went. The hamburger at 5 Guys was great though.

+ + + HOPE SPRINGS

Who would not enjoy watching Meryl Street and Tommy Lee Jones in a cool theater for two hours. I really did enjoy this film although many people did not. I heard from one person that her own marriage was so perfect that she could not relate. Excuse me, but I think all would agree that there are ups and downs for all couples. It may be for a different reason than the one in the film, but face it...this problem and the way they solved it was a delight. Meryl's body language was fabulous. Steve Carell was excellent as their therapist.

+ + + + CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER

I had to really think about this one. It is about a couple who are separated and contemplating a divorce. They are committed to remaining as best friends. This becomes complicated when each one starts the dating process. Rashida Jones as Celeste and Andy Samberg as Jesse play their respective parts beautifully. Language and drugs were a bit of a problem with me. The film has a voice of its own.

+ + + + LAWLESS

This movie is well made. It had everything for the viewer....humor, sadness, murder and lots of action. Also, it was a true story of the Bondurant brothers based on the book written by the son of the youngest brother, Jack. Jack was played by Shia LaBeouf. He was awesome. Do see this one.

??? KILLER JOE   I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO REVIEW THIS FILM. Instead, I would like you to email me and let me know what you thought. All I will say is that I was insulted by this film.

"Too many movies this issue? You know me!
See you at the movies!
