From the Director's Desk
The month of March seems to have flown by! What a busy month. While our students have been busy preparing for their TCAP exams and enjoying their extra-curricular activities, I've been busy addressing the issues and concerns of a California-based anti-corporal punishment organization. This group has been a major distraction. MAHS has always been a very safe and orderly school and corporal punishment has been a part of our disciplinary policies since our first year of existence. They, however, are opposed to any form of corporal punishment.
But their protest and opposition can't stop the mighty Lions of MAHS from marching on. We continue to work hard in our academic preperation and play hard in our extra-curricular endeavors. In less than two weeks, MAHS students will take their TCAP exams and we will finish the school year with a flurry of curricular and extracurricular activities through May of this year. So try and keep up!
Don't forget, you can find more information about MAHS on our WEBSITE at http://mahsmiddleandhigh.com/. Take care! Curtis Weathers, Executive Director |

G.R.E.A.T. Program at MAHS!

The G.R.E.A.T. Program is a school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curriculum. The program's primary objective is prevention and it is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership. The G.R.E.A.T. lessons focus on providing life skills to students to help them avoid delinquent behavior and violence to solve problems.
An officer of the Memphis Police Department, Mr. James E. Travis, teaches six classes each Thursday to MAHS sixth graders to help strengthen their skills for coping with the constant pressures associated with street gangs. The classes also include safety tips and information on how to avoid troubling situations. These sessions have been underway for three months now and our students thoroughly enjoy them.

MAHS Students Invade Tennessee Capital

On Wednesday, March 11th, MAHS students and parents paid a visit to our state capital for the annual Charter Schools Day on the Hill event. We joined representatives from other charter schools to meet and talk with legislators about the laws that govern Tennessee Charter Schools and to proposed new ones that will improve how charter schools operate in Tennessee. This year, over 40 parents and students from MAHS participated in this very important event. We met as many legislators as possible and told them about all of the good things happening at MAHS and in other Tennessee charter schools. It was another great opportunity for our students to learn how the legislative process works! We had a great time!

California Anti-Corporal Punishment Group Attacks MAHS.

The Memphis Academy of Health Sciences is a safe and orderly school, but that apparently is not enough for a California-based anti-corporal punishment group called "The Hitting Stops Here." For weeks now MAHS has been under attack by this group because of our use of corporal punishment. They continue to issue slanderous and inflammatory statements about Mr. Weathers (the Principal), the school's staff, and the school as a whole. They are an anti-spanking, anti-corporal punishment organization that has selected MAHS as a battleground school it seems in their fight to banish corporal punishment throughout the south. They have staged several protests outside of our school.
MAHS is a very safe and orderly school and we will not allow any organization to change that. Our response to their allegations has been posted on our website as well as our position on corporal punishment.

Sports Round-Up |
Boys Baseball and Girls Softball Teams are Undefeated!!
So far so good! Our girls softball team is 2-0, winning each of their first two games by large margins. Our boys tied each of their first two contests and are improving with each game. The season has been slowed by the weather (lots of rain), but it looks like we may have successful seasons for both our boys baseball and girls softball programs.
Note: MAHS track season was canceled because of budget cuts.

Extra Curricular |
Extra curricular activities at MAHS are an important part of school life. These programs and activities provide enjoyment for students and contributes to their overall growth and development. We enjoy our extra curricular programs at MAHS and we're always interested in expanding our offerings.
Majorettes & Drumline on a Winning Streak!!!

March was another successful month for our Majorettes and Drumline. They participated in three jamboree competitions, two of which resulted in 1st place finishes, and one second place finish. For the year, they have accumulated 6 first place performances and four 2nd place performances. They just keep on winning!! Our Majorettes and Drumline are in a class by themselves! Congratulations team! Way to represent excellence in your work! Kudos to Ms. Robinson, Cory and the entire team! |
