MAHS STUDENTS ATTENDING CHARTER SCHOOLS DAY ON THE HILL EVENT
|
On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, MAHS students and parents will visit our state capital for the annual Charter Schools Day on the Hill. This annual event was created as an opportunity to meet and talk with local legislators about the Tennessee Charter School statutes. This year, over 40 parents and students will be in attendance from MAHS. We want to meet as many legislators as possible and tell them about all of the good things happening at MAHS and in other Tennessee charter schools.

From the Director's Desk
WOW, what a start to the 2009 calendar year. There have been all sorts of activities here at MAHS during the past couple of months, the best of which was the inaugural celebration of President Barack Obama. But there were many more activities and we'll tell you about a few in the news items below.
We are well into the second half of the school year and the excitment continues. In January, MAHS students celebrated Martin Luther King's birthday and the swearing in of the first African American as President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. In February, Black History Month, we celebrated the historical accomplishments of African Americans here in this country. Our basketball teams wrapped up their seasons and our baseball teams are about to begin theirs.
Next month, MAHS students will take their TCAP exams and we will finish the school year with a flurry of curricular and extracurricular activities through May of this year. And don't forget, you can find more information about MAHS on our WEBSITE at http://mahsmiddleandhigh.com/. Take care! Curtis Weathers, Executive Director

WOW! What an Inaugural Celebration!!
Well, it's official, Ame rica has its first African American President, Barack Obama. And boy, does he have his work cut out for him. A bad economy, two wars, a housing crisis, and a banking system on the verge of collapse. But with all of that, MAHS students are wishing President Obama the very best! "He holds our future in his hands," one MAHS student said.
We'll keep you in our prayers President Obama! The students of MAHS are pulling for you!

Thank You FedEx ! MLK Day at MAHS
At the same time we celebrated Barack Obama's accomplishments during the inaugural celebration, we saluted another great African American, Martin Luther King, Jr. But just before that, on Monday, January 19th, we celebrated MLK Service Day at MAHS. And once again, volunteers from FedEx, St. George's Independent School, Lausanne Collegiate School, and Volunteer Memphis came to help spruce up the school. It was another great day at MAHS!

Majorettes & Drumline Win 1st Place, AGAIN!
MAHS Majorettes and Drumline have been super busy the last couple of months. Since January they have competed in three Jamborees, performed in the Black History Program and marched in one parade. Of the three Jamborees they've competed in, they have brought home two first place trophies and a second place, which should have been a first place, but we'll leave that alone! They are clearly in a class by themselves...in championship form! Congratulations Ms. Robinson, Cory and the team. Our Praise Dancers, Step Team, and Choir have been busy as well with performances all over the greater Memphis area. Our Step Team competed last month and brought home first place and third place trophies! And just another reminder, our MAHSvelous Choir will be in concert March 14, 2009 with a special performance by our praise dancers. See our calendar for details.
