A Perfect Season
7 - 0!!!
Score board
The MAHS Fighting Lions football team just recently completed a perfect football season.  We ended the season 7-0 with a victory over J.P. Freeman and captured our  second Divisional Championship in three years.  Post season play began this past week and MAHS, for the second time this season, defeated Corry Middle School 6-0 in our first playoff contest.  MAHS will play again next Tuesday in a game that will determine who plays for the city championship.

We are extremely proud of our football players and coaches and wish them the very best in their efforts to win the city and state championships.

From the Director's DeskDirector
This is our second E-News publication and I hope it is helpful in keeping you informed about what is happening at MAHS.  Please feel free to let me know via email any suggestions you may have that will help make this publication more effective.  This school year continues to be full of great and exciting events and activities at MAHS.  Our football team is undefeated (8-0) and seems to be headed for the city championship game (if we win next Tuesday), we had a record number of students make the honor roll this past grading period, and our students have been performing and representing MAHS in various extra-curricular activities all over the greater Memphis area.  It has been a busy first two months of school!

Again, thank you for your continued support and don't forget, you can find more information about MAHS on our  NEW WEBSITE at http://mahsmiddleandhigh.com/.  We encourage your participation in all MAHS activities and please feel free to contact us about any event you have questions about.  Thanks!

HSBC Volunteers Put in Floors at MAHS

Curtis

Sixteen volunteers from HSBC showed up this past Friday and installed tiled flooring in four MAHS classrooms.  The volunteers worked from early morning to late evening to complete the job.  The rooms look great and we appreciate their efforts.  This project was in collaboration with our partners at Volunteer Memphis and Hands On Memphis.  We also want to thank Rexie Chambers of Chambers Construction for helping manage the project free of charge. Their efforts once again shows the effects volunteerism can have on a school environment. Click to view photos.
Thank you HSBC!!

Choir & Praise Dancers Perform

MAHS Praise Dancers and the Voices of MAHS Choir had a magnificent performance at the 2008 Adoption/Bike Tour Program that celebrated the adoption success of families in the Shelby County region. The program took place on October 6, 2008.  These two groups danced and sang to Mayor Wharton, the bike riders, the Memphis and Shelby County adoption staff and other spectators as the bike riders departed for their next stop in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Two of the song selections, "What About The Children" and "Love Train," reminded the bike riders and the many spectators that families are special and children deserve to be in a family environment that is safe, loving and supportive.

Both the Choir and Praise Dancers were TERRIFIC!!  Click here to see event photos!

Unprecedented Honors for MAHS Honor Students

Honor Roll Students

If the first grading period of the school year is any indication of how the rest of the school year is going to be, then we're in for an incredible year!  At the first grading period Honors Program, Principal Weathers used the word "unprecedented" to describe our honor roll recipients.  For the first time in the history of MAHS nearly 100 students achieved honor roll status and 21 of them made the Principal's List.  That is simply AMAZING!

The Honors Program was a Blast!  Our Honors Programs are more like pep rallies than formal programs.  But this one was special.  It included our speaker, Mrs. Teza Stimage, mother of MAHS sixth grader Kendall Stimage (also an honor roll student), Mrs. Stimage is an emergency room nurse at Methodist Hospital and she shared with students her on-the-job experiences as a nurse and how, if they're interested, they can become a nurse as well.  She was GREAT!  Several students received additional awards from teachers as fellow students, in the MAHS tradition, congratulated them.  It was a wonderful, exciting program.  Click here to see photos:  Honors Program Photos

Board Member Michael Ugwueke Honored in Grace Magazine!

Dr. Uquikii
This month's edition of Grace Magazine has a feature story on MAHS governing board member, Dr. Michael Ugwueke. Dr. Uqwueke has served on the MAHS board for about a year and has provided guidance in the development of our new high school and the continued performance of our middle school. Dr. Ugwueke has over 20 years experience in the health care industry with special emphasis on strategic planning, quality improvements, operations, customer services and development of strategic relationships with physicians and the community. This extensive background has prepared him for the role he currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Methodist South Hospital. He is solely responsible for the 200 bed hospital that serves a population of over 250,000 and employs a medical staff of over 200. In his 18 month tenure at Methodist South, he has turned the hospital into the "BEST" performer in the Methodist Healthcare System. He and his wife Rebeca have two children, 9 year old Michelle and 5 year old Michael Jr.

Thank you, Dr. Ugwueke, for your service and commitment to MAHS and congratulations on your accomplishments!
Sports Round-Up

On to the Play-Offs!

Curtis

The MAHS middle school football team has once again made it to post-season play.  This week they defeated Corry Middle School 6-0 to advance to the semi-final game against Southside, which will be played next Tuesday, 4:30 p.m. at Whitehaven High School.  MAHS beat Southside two weeks ago to clinch the divisional title, but this game will be for even higher stakes...a chance to play for the city championship.  Come out and support our team.  GO LIONS!!

Girls Volleyball
MAHS ended its volleyball season with a record of 7 - 10.  This was our second volleyball season and we're looking forward to a better season next year.

Boys and Girls Basketball
Tryouts for boys and girls basketball were held last week for both middle and jr. varsity teams.  Students are excited about this season.  Basketball final schedules and rosters will be released next week, but it looks like our first basketball game for our freshman boys team is Monday, December 1st, and for our middle school boys team it's Monday, November 10th.  No word yet on our girls' schedules.

Extra Curricula
Extra curricular activities at MAHS are an important part of school life.  These programs and activities provide enjoyment for students and contributes to their overall growth and development.  We enjoy our extra curricular programs at MAHS and we're always interested in expanding our offerings.

Step TeamSteppers
This is our Step Team's first year of existence and they have done an outstanding job thus far.  Under the leadership of Coach Peterson, the Step Team has performed on three different occasions.  Coach Peterson is also the middle school Physical Education instructor.  Their next performance will be here at MAHS on October 14th for the Children's Health Week proclamation signing ceremony for LeBonheur Children's Hospital.  The Step Team has 16 members.  Go MAHS Steppers!!

Majorettes & DrumlineMajorettes 2
MAHS Majorettes and Drumline have been busy since the start of school with multiple performances in parades, jamborees, pep rallies, and football games.  And with each occasion, they get better and better!  They currently have performances scheduled for three college football games, another parade, and, of course, the MAHS championship football games.  Our majorettes and drumline are sponsored and coached by Ms. Claudia Robinson and Cory Williams.  Ms. Robinson is also our middle school sixth grade reading instructor, cheerleader and track coach.

MAHS Cheerleaders
This year, MAHS has 22 wonderful cheerleaders.  They are a great group of girls (oh...and we have a mascot Lion, too!)  MAHS cheerleaders are the heart and soul of the school and we're extra proud of them!  Go Cheerleaders!

Debate TeamsDebate
MAHS eight grade and ninth grade debate teams competed three weeks ago in their first school-wide debate.  The topic:  "Why Should African Americans Vote Republican." The 8th Grade Team took the opposing view and the 9th grade team supported the premise.  The teams were scored on substance, delivery, and preparedness.  The eight grade team defeated the freshman team!  Congratulations eight graders!!  Our next debate is scheduled for October 17th.  Topic:  "Who Should You Vote For?  The Obama Team vs. The McCain Team."  The 8th graders will represent the Obama Team and the 9th graders will represent the McCain Team.  You won't want to miss this one!!
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read our e-news update .  We hope you have enjoyed reading about our school.  You will receive our next edition in about 30 days.  Take care!
