MAHS News and Announcements

CurtisNew Partnership
MAHS has a new partner from the Health Sciences community--the Memphis Health Center, Inc!!  And we are extremely proud to have this wonderful organization as a partner.  The Memphis Health Center (MHC) was incorporated in 1973 as a 501(c) federally qualified health center with the goal of increasing access to comprehensive primary and preventive health care and reducing health disparities in medically underserved areas. MHC initially opened in a storefront in the Metro Shopping Plaza at Crump and Danny Thomas Boulevards. The initial focus of the Center was on preventive medical and dental care. The health center now offers a complete range of health services, including physician and nursing care, diagnostic laboratory and x-ray services, pharmacy, home health, dental, and transportation services.  Their main office is located at 360 E.H. Crump Blvd., Memphis, 38126.  They have other offices in the Memphis area.  Their web address is: www.memphishealthcenter.org, or you can read about them on our website.  They were GREAT at our Fitness Assessments last weekend!  We're off to a great start.  Thank you MHC!

MAHS Infant Mortality Initiative (IMI)

Next month, MAHS will launch an initiative designed to help in the fight aganist Infant Mortality.  The MAHS Infant Mortality Initiative (IMI) will consist of several elements designed to educate the community about the effects of infant mortality and ways to prevent it.  Memphis has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation.  Last week, ABC News 20/20 aired a special program about our city's struggle with this seemingly intractable problem.  Copy this web address into your browser to view a video from 20/20: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=5627305&page=1

MAHS students will be intimately involved in this project and it will serve as a tremendous learning experience for them.  In addition, many of our health care partners will participate as well.  So stay tuned, more will be shared in the coming months.

Mr. Deke Donates $25,000 to MAHS
CurtisMr. Deke Iglehart, MAHS' Super Star volunteer tutor, has never been at a loss for words when talking about the students he tutors at MAHS.  This summer, however, he took his commitment a step further.  Through his former employer, First Tennessee, a donation of $25,000 was given to MAHS on his behalf.  These funds will be used to support the math department at MAHS, as well as other expenses related to our instructional program.  We are incredibly grateful for the support and commitment demonstrated by Mr. Deke and we sincerely thank First Tennessee as well.  Go Deke!!
