Welcome to May!
When I was a kid, there was a custom that on May 1st, "May Day," my friends and I would make small bouquets of flowers, put them on people's porches, ring the door bell and run! We left these anonymous gifts, sometimes for complete strangers - just for the fun of it. It was the pure joy of giving that motivated our actions.
There are several official reasons for celebrating "May Day," but for us, as kids, we just loved giving gifts to people. All kids know how great it is to get presents and this was our opportunity to give something away to other people, just to brighten their day. We had no thought of receiving any credit or reward for what we were doing. There is such beauty in a child's heart!
I have a goal this year to have more fun in my life on a regular basis. Sometimes we can get so serious about this business called living! My intention is to lighten my heart and enjoy the simple things all around me - as often as I possibly can. Life gets dreary when we neglect our need for joy and fun!
The weather here is starting to get a little nicer. We're getting a few sunny days. I am enjoying the sounds of the tree frogs croaking at night, and the landscape that changes almost moment by moment as spring unfolds around me. Every day my garden looks a little different from the day before. I'm stopping to notice that... and appreciate the miracle of growth and change in the natural world.
As we move towards summer time, let yourself find joy in simple and ordinary things. Fun doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Joy is free and available to each of us, every day! It is up to us to look for it and allow ourselves to feel it. Haul off and have fun! |

"Now and then it's good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy." ~ Guillaume Apollinaire "People are like stained glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within." ~ Elisabeth Kubler-Ross "What is now proved was once only imagined."

Recovering From a Long, Hard Winter
Cleaning Up the Mess and Moving On
At long last, the winter is over! No more snow. No more endlessly dark days. Spring is officially here and it's beginning to show! I'm out in my garden every day now. My attention is focused on what needs to be done to repair the damage from the harsh winter and help the garden into its full summer splendor.
It is an interesting process in the garden right now. Our winter was very harsh and I've lost a number of plants. Some large shrubs that I've had for 9 years decided that this particular hard winter was the last straw. They've given up!
It has become necessary to remove the dead plants and replace them. Some are obviously dead. It's easy to tell that they are not coming back.
Other plants are more questionable. They seem to have some 'signs of life' but in general, they too look like they are at death's door at best.
I'm carefully evaluating each plant. Some that have struggled for their entire life, but really lost ground this winter, simply need to be replaced. It's time to give up on them and replace them with something that will better tolerate the conditions of my particular landscape.
Some plants that show some signs of life, I've decided to cut back to the 'core' and give them time to recover. They certainly don't look pretty. These plants are stripped of all their dead foliage, and are nothing but a skeleton of branches. If they survive, it will take several years for them to look good again, and contribute positively to the landscape. In the meantime, they will be in 'recovery mode.'
It is difficult to let go of some of these dead plants. They've been with me for a long time in my garden. I remember what they looked like when they were healthy and vibrant. Remembering 'what was' and trying to pretend that it 'still is' is futile. These plants are dead. Nothing will bring them back. I have to let them go.
As I work in my garden to handle winter's carnage, I'm reminded of the similar process that we all must go through continuously in our lives. Sometimes, things die: relationships, careers, our plans, ways of thinking, and even our dreams sometimes cease to exist the way we once knew them. We have to let them go. It isn't easy. Sometimes we aren't sure they are really dead! Sometimes there is a little life left in them and we feel compelled to try to nurture that spark back into a flame. Other times we deceive ourselves into believing that there is something still alive, even when the opposite is true: they are dead.
The best we can do is make our most honest determination about the true 'state' of something in our life. If it's dead, we need to grieve the loss and gracefully release it.
If we think there might be life 'at the core' then we need to cut out all the dead wood and see if it can be resurrected. If we undertake this process, however, we need to know that we must be patient. The recovery might take a while, and in the meantime, it might look unattractive and awkward. We have to be willing to put in the time and patience to allow it to heal and flourish. Sometimes we are willing and able to do this. Sometimes we aren't. If we aren't, it is actually better for all involved to let go... and move on to something new.
In our gardens, and in our lives, we have to recover and repair the damage that hard winters, and harsh realities leave in their wake. That is part of life's journey. There is learning available to us in these experiences, if we open our eyes and our minds to it. Coming through a hard winter in our lives isn't always easy, but the gifts are there for us if we are willing to do the clean up work. It isn't always easy or pleasant, but the gorgeous summer beckons! If we are willing to do the work, then we can reap the rewards this summer and for all the summers to follow.
Dedication, patience and wisdom can guide our actions as we decide what to nurture through it's rehabilitation, and what we let go of, grieve and move on from. It's part of the process of learning how to skillfully live this life!
Whatever your winter, I wish you a peaceful and conscious recovery. Let go of all that has died. Nurture what you are willing to help heal and resurrect. Enjoy all that has survived the difficult time. Celebrate and revel in the life that remains!

Inspirational Song The Other Side - Anne Murray
Music is a huge part of my personal and spiritual growth process. I use music every single day for motivation, inspiration, and as a tonic when I need comfort and encouragement.
I heard this Anne Murray song several years ago, and it really speaks to me about moving through change, difficult times or taking risks.
In our challenges, we have a unique opportunity to break through to new heights on the 'other side' that we can't get to any other way. My teacher, Dr. Bruni, used to say, "The best way out is always through." We have to move through our challenges and not settle down into them. The reward is finding a gift that cannot be received any other way.
Let yourself be lifted and motivated by this inspiring and beautiful song about 'the other side' of our challenges.
Here is an excerpt from the song:
Through each life time run rivers to cross What if there's no life line and you're sinking or lost Just believe in your direction Let your heart explore Cause you can't reach new horizons Standing on the shore
There are mountains we need to climb But the mountains standing in our way
are only in our minds And the risk of going nowhere Is the greatest risk of all So just listen to the voice that says I'll catch you if you fall
On the other side of doubt is faith On the other side of pain lies strength The journey may seem endless When you know the road is rough And on the other side of fear... is love

Nola's Movie Pick
Under the Tuscan Sun

Movies are one of my favorite ways to relax and inspire myself! Many movies have profound messages for us, embedded within the stories they tell.
Under the Tuscan Sun is one of my favorite 'girl power movies!' Since I wrote this month about recovering from the long, hard winter, I decided this was the perfect movie to share! The story revolves around Frances, an American writer who's husband leaves her for another woman. As Frances reels from the unexpected and unwelcome life change and moves through the painful divorce process she feels lost and disoriented. Her hope and faith in life, and in herself, are shattered.
In an attempt to cheer her up, two friends send her on a tour of Tuscany. As she journeys through the beautiful Italian countryside, she makes an impulsive decision to buy a villa and start her life anew. Her villa is old and run down, and as she undertakes a major renovation project on her new home, she begins to remodel herself as well. This process allows her to discover the woman hiding inside her own skin as she creates a unique and wonderful family and finds new and unexpected love.
This is an enchanting and hilarious story of a woman's journey back to completeness after the shattering of all she knew to be true about herself and her life.
It is an inspiring and entertaining story that helps us all believe in our ability to recover from the worst of life's disasters!
