Welcome to February!

Here we are in the short winter days of February - at least here in the continental US! As we experience more darkness, colder temperatures and shorter days, it is sometimes challenging to feel cheery and optimistic. Times of darkness, however, can be magical and transformative. Think of the caterpillar's time in the cocoon. A miraculous metamorphosis occurs in that dark, confined space while to the outside world, it appears that nothing much is happening!

Winter can be that way for us!  We can spend more time turned inward - resting and recharging for the new life that spring will bring.

Even in the midst of winter, I've noticed that some of my bulbs are already sending up their tender green sprouts. I marvel at their courage to poke above the ground and survive the cold!

The daffodils and crocus are already reminding us that winter passes, and spring and summer will return once more! I'm reminded of a lovely quote by Albert Camus who said, "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."

"Courage is very important. Like a muscle,
it is strengthened by use." ~ Ruth Gordon

"Instead of thinking about where you are, think about where you want to be. It takes twenty years of hard work to become an overnight success." ~ Diana Rankin

"I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate
his life by conscious endeavor."
~ Henry David Thoreau

Act As If!

Seize Your Day - Live Your Now!

It is natural and normal for us to long for something better than we currently have in our life experience. I think it is part of human nature to yearn and strive to grow and improve.

There is something I've noticed, however, in the striving and yearning that I think it pays to take a look at.

Often, people talk about how different they will behave IF and WHEN something changes in their life. For example, a person driving an old, not-so-nice car might claim that when they can finally get the new, cool car they want, that they will take better care of it and keep it cleaner.

There is something seriously flawed with this logic!

First of all, I've seen it time and time again. Someone finally gets the new car, and within a very short time - it looks just as dirty and messy as the old car!

We create our lives by our consciousness. The attitude that we have towards our current car, will be the attitude towards the new car as well. WE are the common denominator.

The key is to treat our current situation with the respect and care that we think we would use in our 'ideal' situation. This is how we transform our consciousness and our lives!

When we show respect and care for something that is ours, whether it's our car, our clothes or a relationship, we cultivate the attitude of 'having something worth treating well.' When we do that, we make way for the universe to give us the thing we desire, be it a better car, a nicer wardrobe or a healthier more satisfying relationship.

If we treat our current situation with lack of care and respect, we will never truly be able to appreciate the 'good thing' we think we want. Soon, in our minds, it will become something we wish we could replace because it isn't good enough either.

If we 'act as if' we are already 'there' and cultivate an attitude of reverence and respect towards our relationships and our possessions, we will find more of what we want flowing into our lives. It's a universal law!

So, spruce up that car! Hang up and properly care for your clothes!  Treat your friends and loved ones with the respect you know that you want to be treated with.

Cultivate an attitude of appreciation for everything in your life, treat it with respect, take care of it and watch your world become new!

Inspirational Song
Keep the Candle Burning - Point of Grace

Music is a huge part of my personal and spiritual growth process. I use music every single day for motivation, inspiration, and as a tonic when I need comfort and encouragement.

I love this song by Point of Grace. It's about continuing on during the dark times. The song encourages us to keep the flame of hope and faith alive inside us - even when things in our outer lives aren't going the way we would choose. This is a great song of hope and inspiration.

Here is an excerpt from the song:

You think you're alone there in your silent storm
But I've seen the tears you've cried
falling down and trying to drown
The flame of hope inside
Let me tell you now, tell you now

When you're walking in the dead of night
And your soul is churning
When your hope seems out of sight
Keep the candle burning
All it takes is one steady heart in a world that's turning
Shine a light and pierce the dark
Keep the candle burning
Keep the candle burning

This isn't the best recording of the song, but you can check it out here on Youtube:

Nola's Movie Pick
Rudy

Rudy - Picture of DVD coverMovies are one of my favorite ways to relax and inspire myself!  Many movies have profound messages for us, embedded within the stories they tell.

Rudy, is one of those movies.  It's an older film that tells the true story of Rudy
Ruettiger, a short, not particularly skilled football player who longs to go beyond his allotted station in life and play football for Notre Dame.

Rudy comes from a steel mill town, where everyone from his social class is expected to work in the mill.  His entire family and community accepts this as the only path through life.  Rudy has dreams of attending the University of Notre Dame and playing on the team for the Fighting Irish.  Everyone tells him this isn't possible.  He faces incredible obstacles and no support for his dreams of living a life that is more than what he's been born into.

It is an inspiring true story of the power of having a dream and working for that dream with all your heart and soul.  The impossible becomes possible when commitment and determination meets our dream.

In pursuit of his dream, Rudy not only forges his own character, but inspires everyone around him with his persistence and determination.  He was certainly not the best player Notre Dame ever had.  In fact he was mediocre at best.  It was his heart, spirit and unwavering commitment that inspired his teammates, friends and family.

Rent this movie today.  It's a great film to watch with your kids - to help them realize the power they have within them to blow past any barriers that stand between them and achieving their full potential.

Enjoy the short, dark days of winter and anticipate the light that will be coming soon with the dawning of spring.

I wish you a joyful and satisying February!
