BRIGHT BEGINNINGS HELPS MORE THAN EVER

krsityBBYMCA Bright Beginnings has become a community-driven program helping so many families in Richmond County and throughout the Northern Neck.  Working together this year, the Richmond County YMCA and the Westmoreland YMCA took 52 children back-to-school shopping, where each received several new outfits and a new book bag and school supplies.  An additional 27 children received a new book bag with school supplies.  The 79 children provided for this year has been the most in the 8 years of the program.

Planning for this summer's shopping event started in 2011 when an anonymous donor from Westmoreland County stepped up to personally sponsor 25 children from Westmoreland.  The donor stated, "There are just so many children in our area who need this and I want to help."  Nearly 40 volunteers gave time to this two-day shopping trip to assist each child with thier selections.

Branch Executive, Philip, Belfield states, "Bright Beginnings is not just about giving kids new clothes, but it is more about helping these children and families understand their community cares about them and about their success, primarily in school; we hope the enthusiasm these children will have because of these new clothes will translate into enthusiasm with their school work."

EXCITING CHANGES AT THE Y ANNUAL AUCTION
For 16 years now, volunteers have relied on an annual silent and live auction to help fund social responsibility at the Richmond County YMCA.  For the past 12 years, the event has been held at Woodland Academy, in Westmoreland County.  "Woodland Academy has been a fabulous partner in our annual event for many years; they have been great to work with, at the same time our committee wanted to see the event held here in Richmond County.  We are excited about being a part of rejuvenating the Town of Warsaw," commented event chair, Carol Motley.

Sundaes on Saturday, the theme of this year's event, will take place at the new town park on Main Street in Warsaw, the heart of Richmond County.  The committee is also trying to decrease the number of items while increasing the overall quality of each item or package up for bid. Many of the past favorites will still be up for bid to include made from scratch baked goods to vacations, antiques, gift certificates, home decor, hunting and fishing trips and even an authentic autographed baseball by long-time Atlanta Brave, Chipper Jones.
Sundaes on Saturday will take place on Saturday September 29, with doors opening at 5:30 pm.  Tickets are $35 if purchased by September 20.  $45 after and at the door.  If you have a unique service or item to donate to the auction feel free to contact Philip at the Y, 804 333 4117.
