| YMCA HONORS JEROME NELSON AS VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR | | |
Jerome Nelson was recently recognized at the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA Annual Meeting as the Richmond County YMCA volunter of the year.
In Richmond County, the sport of soccer is synonymous with the name Jerome Nelson. Since 1996, Jerome Nelson has volunteered for the YMCA, primarily as a soccer coach; he has literally coached thousands of children. He continues to be the #1 special request of parents hoping to get their child on Coach Jerome's team, not just because of his ability to teach soccer, but also because he stresses the importance of good character and life lessons. Outside of fall and spring soccer, Jerome also volunteers to lead the Y's Indoor Soccer Club during the winter months, making YMCA soccer a year-round opportunity.
For the past two years the YMCA has offered an indoor soccer league thanks to the leadership of Nelson. "I volunteer for YMCA Youth Sports because teching kids to help each other and rely on each other and forming a team out of mismatched pieces never gets old or easy, and I love it," said Nelson. |
| SPRING SOCCER REGISTRATION DEADLINE MARCH 2 | |
Boys & girls ages 3-15 are invited to be a part of YMCA Spring Soccer. Deadline to register is Friday March 2. Teams will be divided on March 5, so parents are encouraged to register on time. YMCA Youth Super Sports focus on positive development of children through sports. Through character development and character lessons children are taught better decision making in a group or team setting. If you are a parent and/or have soccer experience, the Y is always looking to develop more volunteer coaches, simply contact the YMCA. |

| HALEY ALLEN RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE | | |
Haley Allen, a student at Richmond County Intermediate School, was recognized by the Richmond County YMCA as its Teen Volunteer of the Year.
Haley received the honor at the YMCA Annual Meeting held at the Hampton Convention Center. Haley volunteered her summer of 2011 as a YMCA Junior Counselor. Junior Counselors assist YMCA Counselors and Camp Directors with creating and implementing games, activities, singing, arts and assist in providing a safe, healthy atmosphere for all of the campers.
The Richmond County YMCA averages over ninety children each week for nine weeks. By volunteering to assist with such a large camp, junior counselors learn the inside track to what it takes to be a YMCA Camp Counselor along with other basic job skills. |
