THE Y ENCOURAGES ALL TO CONTACT COUNTY SUPERVISORS

Year end and year out the Richmond County Board of Supervisors have the daunting task of developing the county budget amongst many other tough decisions that in turn affect so many in our county. Since 1996 the Richmond County YMCA has filled a major void in county services. From recreational programs to health services and even child care and preschool, the YMCA in Richmond County serves people of all ages throughout the county. With county budget cuts looming there is serious discussion around dramatically reducing funding for the YMCA.  Participation in the YMCA continues to increase and actually additional funding is needed to keep up with the community need.

The Board of Supervisors represent the citizens of the county and they need to hear from you to help make the best decisions possible. So whether you feel strongly about a new school or about your Y please let them hear from you.

INDOOR OR OUTDOOR, SOCCER IS GROWING

Indoor Soccer

With the addition of an indoor soccer program this winter, many kids in Richmond County can now play soccer throughout the entire year. The Richmond County YMCA hosted its first day of indoor soccer on Saturday January 8. 43 players from the age of 9 to 18 showed up. "It's very exciting to see so many kids interested in indoor soccer, especially to see so many high school aged youth participating,"exclaimed Philip Belfield, Branch Director. Jerome Nelson, Coach at Rappahannock High School and avid YMCA soccer volunteer, leads the program providing weekly instruction with a focus on ball handling, control and passing. Boys and girls ages 9-11 can register through February 25 for Spring Outdoor Soccer.

On February 26, the Indoor Soccer program welcomes coaches and players from the VCU Mens Soccer team.  The VCU coaches and players will lead drills as well as answer questions about life as a college soccer player
