FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

youthLast month we introduced you to some exciting changes happening here at the Y. We told you about our three areas of focus: For Youth Development, For Healthy Living and For Social Responsibility. Because you are an important part of our organization, we want to share with you the meaning behind each of the focus areas.

Behind "For Youth Development" is our belief that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. The values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. At the Y, children and teens learn positive values and behaviors and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.

Next month: FOR HEALTHY LIVING
BOWERS DONATES BOAT TO HELP FUND SCHOLARSHIPS

sea hunt boatThe Richmond County YMCA
recently received a very unique gift.  The funds generated by the gift will fund scholarships right here in Richmond County.  Mr. Terrell Bowers of Richmond, Virginia approached the YMCA early this summer about donating a used boat to support the YMCA.  The 20 foot, 2004 dual console Sea Hunt also sports a 4-stroke 115 HP Yamaha Motor.  "This is such a generous gift and what is special about this boat is it is very practical for boaters right here on the Rappahannock River," explains Philip Belfield, YMCA Director.  The boat is completely ready to hit the water now and is on display at Whelan's Marina.  "Buyers can expect to save about $6,000 off the book value of this boat," says Belfield.

The funds generated from the sale will support the YMCA Guardian program which provides scholarships for families, seniors and youth that need YMCA services but cannot afford the full program fees.  In 2009 the Richmond County YMCA issued over $115,000 in scholarships so that no one was turned away.  This year the YMCA board of management has a goal to raise $69,000.  Fundraising efforts include the annual strong communities campaign that comprises of gifts from the board , staff, local businesses, churches, YMCA members and other individuals in the community.  Special events are also held each year including, the annual auction to be held November 6th at Woodland Academy.  The YMCA is inviting anyone interested in purchasing the boat to stop by Whelan's Marina.

YMCA PLANS FOR SECOND YEAR OF YOUTH VOLLEYBALL

vballIn 2009 the Richmond County YMCA offered a youth volleyball clinic for the first time.  Based on the comments from parents during the last week, the program was a raging hit.  "I love that the YMCA is offering a youth volleyball program, only a small group of girls get to experience volleyball and not until that reach the eigth grade," explained one parent.

The Youth Volleyball program will be held at RCES on Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning November 2.  The registration period is from October 1 to November 1.  The clinic is led by Meagan Ptucha and will focus on conditioning for volleyball, fundmentals and knowledge of the game.
