Preschoolers Love YMCA and "Food Friends"

The Richmond County YMCA Preschool has taken the iniative to introduce fresh food ideas to their youngsters.  Of course you know the problem our nation faces with childhood obesity.  Rates are increasing at alarming rates and even more so right here in the Northern Neck.

The YMCA has begun a new program called "Food Friends." This preschool cirriculum puts fun into the idea of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Donna Belfield, YMCA Preschool Director, says, "Too many children consume packaged, processed foods as a rule, not just on occasion, so we want to try and educate these children on healthier options."  At the YMCA Preschool students get to experience new foods, such as a raddish, gouda cheese and more after the weekly "Food Friends" Puppet Show.

Healthy Kids Day Draws Hundreds!

The YMCA will once again partner with the Richmond County Little League to provide one of the community's largest family events.  April 10, just following Little Legaue Opening Ceremonies the Richmond County YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day at the adjacent Richmond County Fair Grounds.  "It just makes sense, this community is baseball/softball crazy so we want to go to them, and help make the day even more fun and celebrate healthy kids," exclaims Meagan Ptucha, YMCA Youth & Family Director.

YMCA Healthy Kids Day is a national event that draws thousands across the country in an effort to celebrate healthy choices for youth and families.  Vendors of all kinds will be on hand including, church youth groups, the health department, dentists, local fire safety, rescue squad, a healthy snack station and much more.  There also will be live demonstrations from the VA K-9 Rescue, YMCA Karate program, a GIANT slide and moon bounce and LIVE music.  Healthy Kids Day festivities kick off at 11 am.
