Dear ETC Friends,
This past week has been bursting with spring: the wildflowers are prolific, the hills verdant green, the rivers are flowing fast and high, and SF Bay is ebbing strong. I hope you all have been getting out to enjoy the season!
Speaking of blossoming, ETC has recently hired a new Associate Director, Maureen O'Hagan, also known as Mo. She comes to ETC as a professional river guide, with a strong background in education and managing outdoor programs for UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz. Mo's enthusiasm is contagious so be prepared to be pulled into the Regatta, a mailing party, renewing your first aid or joining us on a fabulous adventure.
We also have recently added three new members to the ETC Board. John Cassidy (known as Cass) is an ETC and Friends of the River early pioneer. He recently retired from the children's publishing company he founded, Klutz Press. We are thrilled to put Cass' creative and whimsical talents to work for ETC. Benjamin Friend is a real estate investment associate, brother of awesome river guide, Jason Friend, and full of great ideas for ETC's future. Alphonso (Al) Mance knows ETC's mission from his experience as a sea kayak guide, as well as being a public defender in Oakland. We are thrilled to have all three of these talented lads on board!
ETC is in full swing with spring and an upcoming blooming summer season. We just finished our River Rafting and Sea Kayak Trainings for new volunteer guides. Congratulations if you are a recent graduate and welcome aboard!
ETC's talented and dedicated volunteers are key to sharing the great outdoors with our diverse and amazing adventurers. Also key is raising funds so we can offer sliding-scale scholarships to those who need a helping hand, be it from their wheelchair into a kayak or from the inner city into the wilderness. To that goal we are hosting the an ETC friend-raiser and fundraiser event, Make a Ripple - Make a Difference! Join us at 6:00 on Thursday, May 19th, at the Ft. Mason Conference Center and please bring some new friends into the ETC family fold.
Whether you are a current or past guide, a donor, or a participant, check out our upcoming adventures. From paddling on Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe or through the sea caves in Mendocino to rafting one of our planet's most stunning natural wonders, the Grand Canyon,
ETC calls you to the wild!
Yours in adventure,
Diane Poslosky
ETC Executive Director

Make a Ripple Make a Difference!
Join ETC's volunteers, board members, staff, and donors for a delicious organic dinner and wine as we share ETC's important mission and vibrant community with our friends and family!
Mark McGoldrick will be one of our fabulous presenters. He is an Alameda County public defender, a solo performance artist, ETC Volunteer, and benefit trip organizer.
"ETC's extended adventures are a fun, safe way to commune with nature, build personal strengths, and form lasting friendships. Through working together over an extended period of time, each person's skills and aptitudes are discovered and encouraged. The group creates a world in which each individual is a fully active, engaged, integrated participant. In a sense, the entire group has a chance to redefine what it means to have a 'disability' in our society."
-Mark McGoldrick

How I survived the 2011 Spring
River Guide Training
by Sara Lafleur
True happiness and adventure is not limited to distant lands and times. Oh no, friends, it can be had right here in the backyard of this sunny frontier state - just take me to the river and call upon your fellow river-lovers. Bring a tent, preferably a rain-proof one, a guitar, a wetsuit, and some excellent teachers. I'll meet you there.
Yes, the 2011 Spring ETC whitewater guide training shall remain fresh in our minds. Sure we all knew we were there for a reason - to learn the sweep, pry, and draw strokes, how to get out of a hole once you're sucked in, how to high-side, rescue your swimmers with rope and paddle, and give a proper safety talk. But the prevalence of morning and evening circle-games and finely-crafted dinner skits served as a constant reminder that we were also there to have a good ole time.
On Day One, the Rapid Swim caught some by surprise as the initial shock of the icy American River pierced wetsuits and rendered an insignificant white water section a true challenge. On Day Two, we got our first taste of big water with 3+ rapids at exceptionally high levels: 6,000cfs. As someone who has experienced class 5 water, I quickly learned that 3+ rapids at high water are not to be messed with. And after our first run of the Gorge, we couldn't quite fathom how we would soon be guiding through tricky rapid's like Fowler's and Satan's Cesspool.
The experience of dump-trucking (when the boat tips everyone out but remains right-side up) with a senior guide reminded us that we are all at the mercy of the river and we must give her our utmost respect. Swimming rapids makes the best of us think twice - "do I have what it takes?" But it is a necessary experience if we are to earn our guide whistles. And come Day Nine, we ran kamikaze through the lower half of the South Fork with excellent lines. I remember coming off the river that day feeling like I could run the whole section with confidence. It was a triumphant, gratifying experience.
The productive thing about ETC's process is that you are always called upon to reflect upon your experiences, you cannot simply go through the motions and call it a day. Often in the day's closing circle or around the fire we were asked to reflect: asked to write a letter to ourselves, asked 'what is challenging to you,' 'what did you do well today,' or 'what do you have to offer,' or 'who do you feel grateful for today'. The answers to these questions brought the group closer and forced us to be honest and fair to ourselves.
Leaving the training, it becomes crystal clear why camp life and life on the river is such a blessing. Over the course of nine days, I did not commit a single thought to the drama of my "real life." It was a million miles away by that point. No computer. No phone. No housemates. Just a full schedule of river activities, new faces, excellent food, the outdoors, and laughter.
So what do you get when you take a large group of adults and ask them to play games and exercises intended for teenagers? Granted, I came into it skeptical, but I realized that I love circles, silent games, and sharing too much about myself. I guess I'm a regular old river rat!
