THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Brad is in fine form today |
Mark Twain opined: "Recently I stated this woman was the ugliest woman I had ever seen. I have since been visited by her sister, and now wish to withdraw that statement." What exactly does Brad Davis have in mind here?

WELCOME BACK CHRIS
|
Chris and Laura enjoy themselves |
After a couple of years in the "wilderness" of Lafayette, Chris Lane has decided he never should have left good old Lafayette Sunrise Rotary Club. He picked today to make a triumphant return, heralded by District Governor Laura Day and former DG George Chaffey who administered the induction. Chris is currently with Stone Creek Insurance, working out of an office in the Veteran's building. George focused on things we might not know about Chris, such as his love for power boating and "wake boarding". Chris was quick to point out he simply facilitates as boat driver, as opposed to actually riding the waves on a surf board. Finally, Chris takes his wife and children to a gun range on occasion which prompted the following warning from George: "The family that shoots together...you don't want to mess with!" Laura reminded Chris that he had re-entered the cast of 1.2 million Rotary members and the good news about his club is that it is one of the 34,000 worldwide. She added that the LSR club is definitely unique, which could be either good or bad news, depending on your perspective.
DONOVAN JENKINS TURNS BLUE
|
We know you'll get even, Don |
After only 40 years as a super active Rotarian in Orinda, plus a major mover and shaker for the Rotary International Foundation through the District, Don finally transitioned from red to blue badge after successfully navigating the challenging red badge initiation criteria. In achieving this milestone, Don cheerfully made his first donation to the LSR Endowment program. Gary Fulcher breathed a sigh of relief because his proudly held record red badge tenure was really never challenged by Don.
PAUL HARRIS STRIKES AGAIN

achievements by LSR members Gillett Johnson, who was in Europe for the occasion; Charlie Franklin, who had already fled to Texas; Paul Fillinger, Walt Nelson and Hays Englehart who did not embarrass Cal by not showing up. On a serious note (occasionally it's possible in this rag) LSR has a splendiferous record in Paul Harris Fellow participation.
PROGRAM
Laura Day was a charter member of the Danville Rotary Club in 1998. She has put in six solid years in her various duties in the District, while ascending to the top leadership position for this year. Laura is no

Laura has us figured out! |
stranger to this club, haven't spent an inordinate amount of time at our meetings, as well as attending the most recent TGITLFOTM. Laura came loaded with inside information about our infamous membership, which she gleefully utilized throughout her presentation. Given her first hand observations about our sometimes irreverent behavior, it's safe to say she gave as good as she got!
Some examples you say? Thanks to Brad for not walking out the moment she began to speak. Saying LSR is like a publication centerfold. Presenting a pair of hand cuffs to Chris Lane, so that he cannot "escape" again. Recognizing Ernie as the greatest treasurer in the club's history who successfully "fixed" the books. Laura definitely adheres to George Chaffey's three rules of Rotary...Have fun, have fun and have fun. She also employed humor in the introduction of her two colleagues while announcing that Pancho had received a major recognition award from RI.
Laura praised the club for its support of the Camp Royal leadership program for incoming high school seniors (LSR sponsors four students this year who are sons and daughters of our members) and Paul Harris contributors on an ongoing basis. She remarked on the quality of LSR Speaker Programs, currently led by Buddy Burke and the focus on club PR, along with the relentless pursuit of new members.

Seriously purple pinkie |
On Rotary International Laura pointed out that polio eradication is the number one goal. With India's latest successes, only Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan remain on the list. $700 million has been raised by Rotary in this endeavor. She is pleased with the new RI President from Japan, Sakuji Tanaka, whose slogan for the year is "Peace Through Service."
Laura's personal objective in taking the DG post is to make a difference. She is developing a vocation training team, while working on a global grant to the district for a Children's Oral Health Project. The District needs to raise $40,000 in this regard, $10 at a time, which grows to $35 and equals $140,000 with an RI grant. The club quickly moved to see the $10, raise it to $20 and add it to the quarterly dues so that every member participates. Well done folks! As for Laura Day, she is definitely what Rotary is all about.
