ANOUNCEMENTS AND OTHER GOINGS ON

Don't mess with Paula

Brad Davis provided a "Rotary Moment" by challenging Paula Bernard and beau David Rees to the Four-Way Test. Among other things he questioned Is It The Truth and Is It Beneficial to all Concerned? Paula promptly put Brad in his place.

Chuck Bove issued a plea for wine barrel raffle donations to be held at Motorama. After some discussion the decision was that each bottle donated by members should have a retail value of at least $20. False labels on Two Buck Chuck will be dealt with severely. Krysten followed up with the declaration that "Motorama is off and running for this year on Father's Day, June 17."

Proud papa, as well he should be

Ernie Furtado is the proud father of a brand new Eagle Scout as reported with pictures with fellow scouts from troop 204 in several local newspapers. David was recently awarded his Eagle Scout rank and it only cost Ernie $50 to the Club's coffers.

The concert stage at the Reservoir will be dedicated on April 25 at 5:00 p.m. A special invitation has been extended by the noon club in thanks for our donation of $5,000 resulting from the canoe raffle proceeds. Free parking if you give the right answer at the gate. (Hint: Your mother's maiden name.)

Know how to make a toga?

No big deal!

Laura Day proved this morning why her upcoming year as District Governor will get off to a rollicking good start. She invited hapless Cal Lee to join her front and center to demonstrate how to dress for a Toga Party, which will be the opening event of her new administration. Cal, suitably attired in suit and tie, was then VERY carefully draped with a decorated sheet by Laura, to which she added a cute little garland headband. Cal's subsequent pirouette was something to behold. Good casting, Laura!

The real Two Buck Chuck?

Chuck Bove was informed by Mark Roberts that Chuck's wife had recently celebrated a birthday. Reply: "She did?!" He acknowledged that her birthday fell on Easter Sunday and that they celebrated with a "Take Out" dinner. That's our man Chuck, big spender.

PROGRAM

Cindy Gershen is a Bay Area native and owner of the Sunrise Bistro eatery in Walnut Creek. She is an advocate for healthy living and an active member of

Cindy is a dynamo

her community. After losing 100 pounds by changing the way she ate, Cindy has helped others make the same lifestyle changes that led to her success. In the fall of 2004, Cindy rallied support to create the Wellness City Challenge, a grassroots organization dedicated to challenging cities and their citizens to achieve better health through practical education, improved nutrition and physical activity.

Organizational highlights have included the Fall Health Fair at the Walnut Creek Jewish Community Center, a 3k/5k walk at the Wellness Festival at Heather Farms Park, a fundraising gala in 2009 and an all-hands on deck event titled "Come to the Table: Change the Food, Change the Future" in 2011. The Mayor's Healthy Cook-off is now in its third year. Cindy spearheaded the Healthy Restaurant Association (HRA) in 2007 that was highlighted in prominent media outlets including Prevention Magazine, Diablo Magazine, Kiwi Magazine, the Contra Costa Times and Bay Area Parents.

With the scientific backing of Drs. Len Saputo and Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist who recently appeared on a CBS "60 Minutes" segment, the "Healthy Eating Guidelines: three simple rules to live by" was born, as a means to combat the escalating rate of obesity and degenerative diseases. These guidelines became the center of the Wellness City Challenge's educational efforts which led to the creation of Label Reading 101, an award-winning children's wellness program. In 2009 the City of Walnut Creek issued a citywide proclamation adopting the "Healthy Eating Guidelines" All 19 cities in Contra Costa County, Board of Supervisors and CA State Assembly and Senate signed the proclamation. All of Cindy's efforts have not gone unnoticed. She was named California Woman of the Year in 2010 by Assembly woman Joan Buchanan.

Conviction and compassion yields great results

Cindy's recent focus has been on teaching healthy eating habits in Contra Costa Schools. That includes the Martinez School District, Las Lomas High School and Mt. Diablo High School. Unbelievable results have been happening in the Mt. Diablo project. Her classes are full and the students have taken to healthy cooking and eating, even providing meals for teachers, which is unheard of in other schools. Cindy showed examples of daily lunch meals which are hearty and healthy at the cost of $1.01 per serving. The kids go home, offering to cook meals for their parents, which again is an amazing example of kids teaching their parents about healthy eating. Cindy came loaded with handouts and gave an emotional, rousing presentation. She said she believes we all have the choice about what we eat, so her restaurant not only serves the healthiest brand of food, but also offers other tasty meals that suit the palates of more "traditional" dietary (or non-dietary) patrons. This is Cindy's second guest speaker appearance at our club. She is highly appreciated for all she is doing for our kids and for us!
