48 years and counting

Spike Speicher and Linda are planning to celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary this weekend. Spike also had a birthday celebration with family at the summer cottage in Michigan. $100 was the very generous offering. Spike also commented he has learned "every Rotary meeting starts at the ATM."
OTHER STUFF
Jim Marggraff says the Russian realtors are still coming! Their mission is to learn about how the U.S. operates the real estate business. A sign-up sheet was passed around for folks to attend a welcoming reception on October 1 and a farewell party on October 15
Troy Feddersen briefed the club about the status of the planned performance stage for the Lafayette Reservoir. This has been a noon club project that has been on the drawing board for 17 years. All kinds of corporate and government red tape needed to be negotiated to get to the point of nearly being ready for construction.

We're doing our best, Troy

All their club has to do now is complete the pledge to raise the full amount of $117,000 before the 4600 square foot stage can become reality. $87,000 has been raised to date. LSR is partnering with the Noon club in this worthy effort via the current fund raising raffle of the canoe. 30% of all raffle proceeds will go directly to that cause. Donations are also expected from a community foundation to help get them over the top.
Co-founder of HOMEteam, Joe Bettencourt, announced a new schedule for the rest of the club year, which will now be appearing in its own section of the Newsletter every week, following the CALENDAR. This hugely

popular and successful service project for the elderly is spreading its wings. A "how to" manual has been prepared and has been freely given to ten other clubs in the U.S. and two International clubs, so far. HOMEteam will also be a beneficiary of the canoe raffle results.
SPEAKING OF THE RAFFLE...CAN YOU CANOE?
Our beloved Tippy made its public debut at the Lafayette Art & Wine Festival on Saturday and Sunday. It was proudly displayed in front of the delightful Collector's Choice Antiques store, across the street from Postino. The owners of the store were wonderfully accepting of our presence there. In fact, Tippy was given a comfy night's sleep in the store, saving the LSR crew a lot of set up and re-positioning on Sunday morning.

Spike and John Sherry, raking it in
|
Tippy proved to be so dazzling in the sunshine that festival goers were compelled to take an up close and personal look and to touch it and marvel at the fact that such a true work of art was produced right here in Lafayette by Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary club volunteers. With the canoe to pull them in and LSR stalwarts led by Spike Speicher, John Fazel and noon club powerhouse Alicia Cragholm to answer their questions, the net take for the two days amounted to $5,120. Not bad for mostly $20 raffle tickets sales plus a handful of the six for $100 variety.
The canoe will continue its public performances this coming weekend at the Pear and Wine Festival in Moraga on Saturday and at Diablo Foods in Lafayette on Sunday. Tippy welcomes all members to take part in this really fun fund raiser. Come join in as many of these community awareness events as you can. It is not hard to take being told constantly, "what a spectacular accomplishment this canoe represents for your club." People are pleased and willing to donate generously to the Reservoir Performance Stage, the HOMEteam and the other worthy causes enumerated on the flyers. By the way...they really WANT the canoe!
MYSTERY ROTARIANS
Due to the unfortunate hospitalization of our scheduled guest speaker, King Alex donned his tap dancing shoes and turned to the old stand-by Mystery Rotarian gambit. Each member submits a list of three things the rest of the membership doesn't know about them. Then the guessing game begins. Who is it? The winning guesser, if there is one, gets absolutely nothing for it. At least he/she doesn't get fined.
