Guests and Visiting Rotarians:
Chuck & Mariam, passing secret notes...to each other?
Returning Marian Woodard, former speaker; Cameron Shearer, semi-obedient son of Rich; Jim Newport, guest of Krysten; Tony Thayer, guest of yours truly; and long-suffering souls Glenda Fillinger, Mariam Worsham and Constance Linneman.
Mike Heller and Alicia Cragholm, dispatched from the noon club on a thinly veiled espionage mission to steal our secrets.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Teenagers still the same, eh?
Delivered in a timely fashion from Rich Shearer, "The chldren now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt of authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
Socrates, 5th Century B.C
NOTABLE EVENTS
May 28th was a big deal for Walt Nelson. Kathe (Mrs Walt) was glad to be his guest at the Yankee Pier in Downtown Lafayette as it happened to be her birthday!
George does it all.
George Chaffey was duly recognized in that June 2nd was an important anniversary date for him: His welcome to Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary in 1987 as a CHARTER MEMBER.
SCOUTING REPORT. Greg Bontemps is showing why he's an Eagle Scout candidate! He's helping host a camp for children of Garden Park Apartments June 27th for his Eagle Scout project, with a farewell barbecue on July 1st starting at 6:00 p.m. What's the big deal? Those children are from purely broken and formerly homeless families, as that's why those apartments were put up in the first place. (note Brad Davis' continuous efforts there). Greg needs Rotary chefs, talented or untalented for the barbecue. If you did not get a chance to raise your hand to volunteer to help at the barbecue please contact Ernie Furtado, who is coordinating the barbecue effort.
SPEAKING OF GARDEN PARK APARTMENTS Brad Davis reports a successful event from prior day's activities there. The Festival drew a huge response from all the kids there.
Mike also loves MOTORAMA
SPECIAL BOOK. The Mom of Mike Heller of the noon club has had a fascinating life, mesmeric enough to have had a book written about her. Lilo Heller grew up on pre-WWII Germany and her memoirs were captured by Tom Adams. The next book signing will be June 12th at Oakwood Health Club.
NEW ROTARIAN. With her son Daniel on hand, Paula Bernard was welcomed into the throes of Lamorinda Sunrise. In typically flawless fashion, Brad Davis got all his numbers right
Welcome to Rotary Paula!
as he shared with her why Rotary has had a special place in the world. Paula is the Branch Manager/VP of Bank of the West here in Lafayette and we look forward to many wonderful years with her on board. Welcome, Paula!
BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS. George Chaffey's been all over in his special airplane, but lately he found himself at the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans. Unlike Colonel Jackson in 1814, George flew away to Charleston afterward and enjoyed breakfast at their Rotary club, then returned westward with horrendous headwinds, making a groundspeed similar to a Conestoga wagon.
You bet we can float acanoe!
TIP A CANOE? Ron Brown reported our canoe project's shaping up! Lamorinda Weekly prominently displayed and reported it'll be a great follow-up to Motorama. All proceeds will be "gravy."
MOTORAMA, Krysten was in great form reviewing tasks and kicking butt. "Sell those tickets," was her theme. Recap: "Sell those tickets." We're here to help the community. Sell those tickets. If you get a chance, sell those tickets.
DEMOTION (Don't read this Thomas). David Waal's house June 24th. Shaping up and tasks allocated.
Fazel & Peeks, serious sr. stuff!
3/4 CENTURY CLUB. June 15th at Orinda Community Church. Lunch and speaker with wonderful history- Betty Budde was a WWII pilot and loves to share the experience! With host John Fazel it will be a smasharoo!
RAFFLE. "Number 577 belongs to....." Nobody until a voice out in the gallery attached to Tay Wheeler shouted at the last minute. No white ball today.
PROGRAM
A worthwile project for everyone to undertake.
April Bell, Tree of Life Legacies, personal historian and multimedia biographer. She does this for "regular" people who turn out to be not so "regular." Her ongoing wish is to inspire us to document our loved ones and ancestry. Furthermore, it creates a time capsule for young people, while "setting the record straight."
There are many ways to document personal history: Written word, Oral history. Scrapbooks, etc. April's specialty is video history.
Ethical Will is a centuries-old Jewish tradition, passing along rich histories. Video history was used on Oprah Winfrey's show to pass along an entire life of wisdom as a person dying of cancer was able to communicate posthumously with her young daughter on a whole assortment of subjects of life and love.
Richard Carlson ("Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" book series) set out one day to write a love letter to his wife with a unique perspective. "If you had only one day to live, what would you say and to whom?" 3 years later he passed away, creating a profound story to accompany his tragedy.
Values of personal history- a sense that "I matter." Sense of belonging. Sense of awareness how events have contributed to our lives.
Of perhaps the greatest value of a personal history is that we see the answers to questions we've forgotten to ask our loved ones. We typically later seek answers to questions about upbringing of our parents and grandparents. With recorded histories this is there for us, as it's done systematically, giving a priceless connection with history.
April shared some videos with us. One was a touching story from a Vietnam vet, describing smells, feelings, and nightmares of the horrible experience. He was able to come to grips with it through the videoing, while passing it along.
On a happier note, Rose Talmadge was valedictorian in 1938 and studied at Yuba College. Through video we were part of her experience in getting her first San Francisco apartment, enjoying details of the experience. She danced and met sailors galore. One she kept trying to avoid, but he kept coming back and coming back. They married in 1951.
Cliff Dochterman recorded his story and relationship with Rotary. He shared the vision of mobilizing the entire nation of Philippines to immunize for polio, and formed the New Horizons Committee in 1981, with an outlook to 2005 (100th Anniversary of Rotary) In this formation stage, Dr. Sabin created an oral vaccine and spoke to Rotary as a member, stating it would be a gargantuan task to immunize the world- taking $100 million.
The rest is history!
