THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Mark is Master of the Thought

"Experience is not what happens to a man. It is what a man does with what happens to him."Mark Roberts quoting actor John Hodgman

VISITING ROTARIAN AND GUESTS

Alicia Cragholm - Noon Club with many "frequent visitor" points.

Jim Marggraff - Last time as LSR visitor

Mark Larks - Ditto

Mike Gibson - Lafayette Library & Town Hall Theatre Spokesman

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

Tay Wheeler - Joined Club on April Fools Day, 1983. Fitting! $40.

Tom scribes too!

Tom Black - Meandering photo shoot through the deep South, staying a step or two ahead of the mighty Mississippi and connecting up with Pat in New Orleans for a Sesquicentennial Wedding Anniversary on Thursday. Not sure how deeply he dug into his wallet, or if anything was actually in there, to celebrate this momentous occasion. Also acclaimed photographer in Lafayette Today article about Motorama. This guy does everything!

SPEAKING OF MOTORAMA...

Krysten Laine displayed a very attractive new poster, advertising

Did she mention sell...sell...sell...Gala Tickets?

Lafayette's Premier Auto Show, the World of Wheels, coming on Father's Day, Sunday, June 19th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is FREE.

It also announces the Motorama Dinner Gala, a special event to recognize sponsers and exhibitors. It will be held Saturday Night, June 18th, at the Lafayette Veteran's Memorial Building at 6 p.m., with Dinner, Dancing and Live Auction. Tickets are $100 per person.

Look for the posters on display in Merchants Windows throughout Lafayette. Also, be sure to patronize the many merchants whose logos appear at the bottom of the poster and are sponsoring this Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary fund raising event.

Did I mention that the theme of this particular presentation by Krysten was sell...sell.sell...those gala tickets...starting yesterday?

AND THE TOWN HALL THEATRE...

Mike Gibson was here to announce Saturday, June 11th is ROTARY  NIGHT at Town Hall Theatre's production of Twelfth Night. Tickets are Half Price for Rotarians. OTHER GOING'S ON WORTHY OF NOTE

Alicia Cragholm was here to promote the Noon Club Concert at the Rez on Saturday.

HOME TEAM going strong sez Joe

Joe Bettencourt announced the HOME TEAM would be out in force before the Concert with 13 Senior Citizen calls set up. Two other clubs will be participating with LSR tomorrow.

Buddy Burke modeled the 2011 version of the Motorama shirts which were available for pick-up this morning. Powder blue and white striped no less. If you ordered one and didn't pick it up at the meeting, he'll hunt you down post haste to retrieve it.

Hays Englehart showed off two Andretti autographed polo shirts which will be part of the auction items at the Gala.

Brad Davis handed out hands-full of posters to the many innocent victims sitting within his reach. His idea of getting volunteers to distribute the posters within the community. We'll see how well this worked out and where some of these posters might actually appear in the coming weeks.

ARIANNE HITS THE JACKPOT

 Arianne does it all!

Not only did she hold the winning raffle ticket, she also pulled the white ball from the bag. Not sure what the total $$$ came to, but it surely made Arianne's day!

PROGRAM

Buddy Burke stepped into the program breach this week to take Walt Nelson off the hook. Buddy was ready and willing to talk about his favorite new vocational topic, Effective Leadership. Careful to not promote directly his new corporate passion, Buddy nevertheless gave a fitting presentation on the subject of leadership, which applies to Rotary as well as any other enterprise interested in achieving positive results from their efforts.

Buddy demonstrates charismatic leadership!

Buddy spoke about the impact of charismatic leaders. Studies have shown that charisma is behavior driven, and that it can be learned. The challenge for leaders is to achieve positive results, which requires a motivated, engaged team.

Engagement is about job fit and leadership which leads to productivity and ultimately profitability.

Effective leaders are able to make emotional, one to one, connections with team members. They are aware of the "what's in it for me" desire on each and every participant. They know how to listen, to solicit ideas and to help achieve a comfort level for everyone.

Leaders tailor the vision, are beacons of positivity, provide energy and enthusiasm, recognize greatness in others and believe in their people.

Leaders know the answer to the question "where are we now?" They understand you cannot manage what cannot be measured.

So what is effective leadership? It is all about getting positive results!

CHAMPION ROWER ACKNOWLEDGED

Katie Rose, the Golden Girl!

Katie Rose Ware was recognized for winning two gold medals in crew competition on Lake Merritt. What a great accomplishment for this Acalanes High School freshman. This is just the beginning Katie Rose!

MYSTERY ROTARIAN

Thomas Peeks had great fun with this one. The clues:

Got you going, didn't I?

1-     Lived in Chicago but didn't join a gang.

2-     Was in the army at Ft. Meade, Md. But didn't join the CIA.

3-     Went to Russia as a Lafayette Traffic Commissioner.

Thomas got almost everyone on the Dan Herbert band wagon. Then emphatically turned that down. He led on one lone wag who kept insisting it was

Enough of this nonsense sez Cal

Cal Lee. Even goading him to say he would be willing to bet on it. (Okay, that was me). Turns out it was Cal, who refused to be fined for some ludicrous accusation about a possible communist affiliation. Fortunately it was time to call it a day before total chaos ensued.
