Mr. two-club member Kenney, back for a visit

Chuck Kenney, citizen of Atlanta, came back to read us a letter from his Penny.  Recalling the song "Over the Rainbow", she said, "Never forget that there's an 'over the rainbow' place for each of us where we can wish upon a star and wake up when the clouds are far behind us."  No wonder Chuck left the clouds of Lamorinda behind him.

Gillett Johnson, along a similar line with an assist from Mark Twain, observed that the frankest and freest product of the human

Gillett, the love letter guy.

mind and heart is a love letter: the writer gets his limitless freedom of statement and expression from the sense that no stranger will see what they write.  Monday being Valentine's Day, leave Hallmark and candy behind, write your love a letter, and free your mind.

VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

Chuck Kenney - Lamorinda Sunrise Club & Somewhere in Atlanta

Spike Speicher - Guest for the first half of the meeting

Linda Speicher - Guest for the whole meeting

Spike Speicher - Newest member in the world for the second half of  the meeting

ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE GEORGE CHAFFEY UP THERE

George, Supreme Inductor

- because it usually means he's going to induct someone.  He rarely ever messes up - that is, until John Harold Speicher was told his name is John Howard Speicher.  Undeterred, George told Spike about fellowship and service and footprints around the world.  He revealed that Spike proves there actually is someone from Kalamazoo, where he grew up.  Spike should be grateful to Michigan, for he met and married Linda there.  However, he had a fun stint in San Diego with the Navy, became a Western Regional Manager type, and has now been a Moragan for 30 years.  Most lately, he's been National Account Manager for Commercial Security Corporation but has thrown that over for canoe building.

Linda & Spike, taking it all in.

He also is inclined toward road biking.  He carries the family name -- his father, son, brother, daughter, and dog all answer to "Spike".  No mention as to whether Linda was offered this privilege.

Sponsor Alex Arnold presented what he poetically called "stuff" for

The "stuff" includes the Rotary pin

newbies, including the dreaded Red Badge.  This somehow led to an observation that there were two Gary Fulchers in the room (a frightening thought), as "Wally" Nelson didn't like his own doctored badge.  Anyway, Spike and Linda were given the traditional pile-on by all the members and were warmly welcomed to LSR.

CELEBRATIONS

Speaking to a respectfully silent group, Brad Davis acknowledged he and Carol have the Perfect 36 when it comes to anniversaries.  Lunch at Pebble Beach was just the

Mr. Perfect 36

thing.  Somehow he didn't empty his whole account there, as he cheerfully paid not only his $20 fine but also $100 to the Permanent Fund of what he called the Foundation (R.I.) but presumably meant to say Endowment (L.S.R.).  He put his money where his mouth is, because he himself has a lot to say about how the Endowment should handle investments.

Celebration Master Dan Garfin observed that 2/8/08 was a banner day, as both Ron Brown and Krysten Laine joined the club that day.  Double trouble if ever there was.

Pat Flaharty celebrated with pictures of the Canoe Caper in Gary Fulcher's infamous Garage.  It all sounds simple enough - you just

You take this tree, and begin to hollow it out

build from the inside out, do a little sanding, slap on a little paint and fiberglass, and pull it off the plug.  Oh, there is something about cutting veneer from traced lines, but there's probably nothing to that.  It was all very educational, especially for the voice from the crowd who thought it was a matter of hollowing out a tree.  Actually, it is a mind-blowing project and Gary is a master shipbuilder.  Hopefully the finished product will bring in what it's worth.

Celebrating the opportunities we give our youth, David Waal announced that applications are now being taken from high school juniors to go to either Camp Royal (wilderness leadership) or Camp Venture (entrepreneurship) this summer.

IS THERE A MOTORAMA WEBSITE?

Let your voices be heard

Ron Brown will emphatically assure you there is.  And it's a permanent major fixture of this club in perpetuity.  The real head honcho/cajunas in addition to Ron pulling the strings, are Krysten Laine (what a surprise) and webmaster Gary Fulcher who will take a few breaks from his canoe).  The website is basically there but will be edited, and the target is to have it finalized in two weeks.  Therefore, Ron gently urges that any criticisms, constructive or otherwise, be made now, or forever hold your peace, at least for a while. Suggestions, such as "start over" will be immediately discarded.

This show is definitely on the road!

Unaccustomed as she is to public speaking, Krysten then got up there and told us how Father's Day will be celebrated.  The first thing she did was whip through all the team leaders, but so quickly that this scribe only caught the name Skip McGowen, whoever he is.  A few more post-Camp Royal leadership types are needed for Main Event Setup, Auction Items, and Main Event Schwag Sales.

There will be an auction at the pre-event, for which Dave Isenberg and his friend, Postino, are each contributing a $1,000 dinner.  This Gala will be the biggest revenue source of the weekend, what with $100 tickets, sponsors and the auction.

Seeing is believing

The finished website, when it becomes live, will be at  www.motorama.us. Krysten will email the link to the work-in-process site to all members so they can throw darts at it. The home page will have pictures of prior sponsors down the left column and of current sponsors down the right.  It will have a lot of information on the whole weekend event.  Buttons across the top are Home, The Events, Be A Sponsor, About Rotary, Be An Exhibitor, Advertising, and Contact Us.  On-line registration will be provided, except that potential major sponsors will be strictly approached by personal contact.  There will be lots of pictures from last year to personalize the event.

Contrary to previous hints, Mt. Diablo Blvd. will not be closed for the event, which will make a whole lot of people less mad at us.  Apparently making up for this unusual modesty, John Fazel allowed as how Lamorinda Sunrise Rotary should be in larger letters on the website.

Skip McGowen, a.k.a. McCowan came up with the excellent suggestion of trying to borrow a super large TV from Best Buy to put on the show about what Rotary is.  Never one to go halfway on these things, Dennis Kurimai feels that Best Buy should not only do that but also should be a sponsor.

Looks like this thing is really rolling thanks to those who are making it happen.

AND MORE CELEBRATION

Did the Prez forget, or was there just more time to fill?  In any case, the meeting ended with Pat Flaharty presenting his neighbor

Dennis (goes blue)
Ken (does too!)

Mike Edwards with a Paul Harris pin (2nd level), and Ken Thomas and Dennis Kurimai receiving blue badges.  Ken was so overcome that when asked to speak, he couldn't think of a thing to say.  Dennis wasn't asked - go figure.
