THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

After a brief moment of disarray, we were bestowed with two thoughts of the day; the first from his former majesty John Fazel as he quoted Satchel Paige, "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?" The second from Reverend Ray Welles," Many want to speak to God, but most prefer it to be in an advisory role." These both brought howls of laughter from the rafters.

GUESTS AND VISITING ROTARIANS

Bill Marquard -  Architect and friend of Gary Fulcher
John Sherry & Bill Eames- Lafayette club, Rolf Mayrhofer, Area Governor nominee from Trier, Germany and Luis Alkon, Concord club.

BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES & SUCH

Four birthdays to celebrate, but four celebrants not with us! George Chaffey, John Linneman, Tom Black, and Joe Bettencourt. A suspicious coincidence?

Paul Bettelheim admitted to three finable offenses. Can this man's judgment be trusted?

Tay Wheeler - The posse finally caught up to him and he was duly sentenced to financial purgatory.

Our newest Rotarian stepped up and admitted his sins like a 2 fazel 1-2seasoned veteran! Dennis Kuramai celebrated his wife Maggie's birthday by watching, or rather helping, her move the both of them to new digs in Lafayette. He really knows how to treat a lady! Fine justified!

TIME FOR OUR ANNUAL GOLF OUTING VICTORY

visiting Rotarian John Sherry announced the annual Golf Tournament to be sponsored by the Lafayette Club. In yet another creative attempt to squeak out a win against Lamorinda Sunrise, they've decided upon a set of rules called "Shamble" for the match. We wonder when they'll reveal what that means! Let's get the winning LSR foursomes organized again and show up on October 4 at the Rossmoor Dollar Club.

ANNUAL DICTIONARY DOINGS

TGITLFOTM coming up! What will Tamara and Thomas dream up this time? The Raeth's will risk their home to us on August 27th  for our monthly affair..  They politely ask for RSVP's, probably to assign blame in the aftermath.

ARIANNE ARRIVES THIS WEEKEND

Steve Ware announced that our fresh, inbound Rotary Exchange 2 fazel 1-2Student, Arianne Inez is to arrive "tomorrow" Saturday the 14th. He's assembling a greeting team for her at SFO. He's also seeking a nice family to host her for Labor Day weekend. Is Steve wagering she'll be in need of a break that soon?

PROGRAM

Mr. Fred Rutledge is a local educator who specializes in bringing Theodore Roosevelt to life! He fell in love with history thanks to his mother and grandfather, who often sat around their dining room table talking about historical topics. He went on to graduate with a degree in the subject from UC Berkeley, followed by higher education at San Francisco State and St Mary's College.
Through the miracle of Rotary (and some fine character acting by Mr. Rutledge) we were brought back to California of May, 1903 as "Theodore Roosevelt" began to tell us about his recent travels across the United States. Dressed as our President and sporting the perfect mustache for the occasion, the entire room was intrigued with stories of the frontier, passing through the Dakotas and sweeping on through Texas and Santa Fe. We shared his astonishment at first setting his eyes on the Grand Canyon. He was poised to speak but could not describe its wonder. The only words he could utter were, "Leave it as it is, man can only marvel!"
Bringing character to life, he revealed the roots of Teddyesque axioms such as, "speak softly and carry a big stick," but he also uncovered the human side of our young President. He shared a moving, heartfelt story of having to shoot a charging bear and watching it land at his feet. This illustrated his compassion for the creatures he'd spent his early years hunting.  The President now regarded nature as something to cherish.
At that particular time in 1903 he had just emerged from his famous Yosemite trip where he and John Muir had executed a ruse to avoid the usual entourage. Disappearing for four days, the two became great friends and created a bond that has been revered by millions since.
"Just the two of us," said Rutledge as Roosevelt," by the campfire underneath the oldest living trees stretching high above the starry night sky, talking, laughing, storytelling." It was here that "I knew only our federal government" could see that this is preserved for our grandchildren and generations to come.
In his professional life, Rutledge oversees educational programs at the Alameda county Jails, outside adult programs for the Tri-Valley Regional Occupational Center and Programs in Livermore. He enjoys portraying Roosevelt because it offers others a glimpse of the past, just as holding a book or historic postcard connects us to those who came before.
