THE ETERNAL LIGHTNESS OF BEING

The Prez himself gave the Thought of today, borrowing from the 1963 Rotary News Bulletin Editor (John's Grandfather no less) in Perry, Iowa: "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden on someone else." In an interesting segue, this was immediately followed by Rich Shearer carrying a cake and leading the crowd in a modest "Happy Birthday To Us." It seems that our Charter Night was 23 years ago Wednesday. Must have been an important occasion to make us violate the vow of a No-Singing Club.

GUESTS

Rotarians:

John Sherry, Lafayette Noon - kudos for helping with our Motorama BBQ.

2 fazel 1-2Larry Duson, same disreputable bunch - kudos for volunteering Bank of the West to assist with handling Motorama cash and credit transactions

Sherry Glover, working for/with L. Duson - well, she isn't exactly a Rotarian, but we certainly  hope she will be, and in the right place.

Rod Ford-Smith - well, he isn't exactly a Rotarian any more, but hopefully he sees the error of his ways

Glenda Fillinger - well, she isn't exactly a Rotarian, but she keeps one propped up.

Katie Rose Ware - well, she isn't exactly, but you know.

BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES AND SPECIAL OCCASIONS

No

Birthdays & Anniversaries on Gary Fulcher's list today, but he had more important things on his mind.  Namely, Carolyn has just had a bout in intensive care.  Happily, she apparently is doing well, and everyone wished her the best. Also, Jackie Welles goes in for a rather uncomfortable-sounding, but hopefully not long-lasting, surgery on Tuesday.

george 6-19Speaking of the above-referenced Charter Night, as George Chaffey often does: He was accused of being the guest speaker that night in 1987. Not true; the speaker actually was Henry Letterman from George's law firm, who suggested that since he himself didn't know anything about this Rotary stuff, but George ought to join (King John later asserted that George was the speaker on the 3rd organizational meeting night, and Cliff Dochterman was the keynote speaker on Charter night. We have no idea where that leaves Henry Letterman, but I'll let George and John duke it out over that one.) Talk about the rest being history. George observed that no Rotarian has ever asked him to join. So of course he was gently requested for $20 for now joining. The Prez then did the same to himself. The third charter member, Tay Wheeler, had been with the Lafayette Club previously and luckily was not here this morning, so he was deprived of the privilege of contributing. They'll get you next week Tay!

HerbertAnother historic moment was 7 years ago, when Dan Herbert lent his presence to the club for the first time. He was rewarded in the usual way. He took the occasion to mention two rather achieving members of the next generation. His daughter Amanda grabbed a Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins in that popular field, "Women's Alliances in 15th Century Britain."  And former member Dave Dickson's daughter Dara, a former Oakland Stroke under Dan's jurisdiction, was on Yale's NCAA championship rowing team.

Occasion to celebrate: Captain Skip McCowan guarantees that we'll win the whole bocce ball tournament. He'll then be able to rub elbows with John Madden and Steve Mariucci. He also muttered that a couple of presumably forgetful folks still haven't come up with fine wine for a certain other occasion.

chuck bove 1-15 10Chuck Bove became a blue badger after a hiatus due to the difficulty of spelling his name. He had $13 in his pocket (at least in one pocket), and by an amazing coincidence this just covered the required $10 for the new correct badge and $3 for the old one.

From Bove to Van den Hove: Aymeric was taken by his hostess to a rainy and rugged Tour de California bike race near Glen Ellen. Third time's a charm; he and Jim Brencic tried to beat the Curse of Lamorinda Sunrise the last two meetings, and finally succeeded. Turns out that Aymeric was the director, producer, photographer, and everything else for this epic.

The Interact "Sole to Soul" project collected 155 pairs of shoes. Also, rumor has it that President Akoni Viray wowed 'em at the assembly.

WE ARE SO NEEDY

Well, let's see. The Prez needs signups for the 3/4 Century Club event on June 16th, setup time around 9:30 or 10:00, event at 11:30, Frank's Church.

Steve Ware needs speakers because he's both the old program chair and the new program chair.  Please email him with suggestions. He couldn't say much more because Becky will be home in 3 hours.

Rich Shearer is moving from cake baker to bike maker, or at least repairer, at the Garden Park Apartments. He needs other simple repairers. If you're too intellectual, you probably shouldn't sign up. Anyway, this happens Saturday, June 12th, 10:00. Guess who you contact for this.

AND THE GREATEST AND MOST IMPORTANT NEED OF ALL IS .....

THE MOTORAMA, starring Krysten Laine! The program today was devoted to, shall we say, an interchange of ideas on this subject.

First of all, everyone has the privilege of owning and wearing a Motorama Shirt, courtesy of Lisa Cohen in the Lafayette Club. She not only made the shirts but, very important to this club, extended credit for them (the bills will come). Buddy Burke was the shirt dispenser, and duly noted that George Chaffey takes an Extra Medium.

Krysten promised an email setting forth the important stuff from this meeting, which is a very good thing because her message will be far more complete and accurate than this feeble rag.

She will start celebrating Father's Day by opening up the place at around 5:00 a.m.

Among the interesting items discussed were:

            BBQ and wine tasting

            Wine barrel raffle item

            Scotch tasting

            Beer from Postino

            Popcorn, Dan Herbert & Interact

VIP booth masseuses, photographers, movies, kids' corner

            Band, '20s & '40s rock & swing, 11:00 - 3:00

            Cars, cars, cars

            Sell, sell, sell

Among the needs are:

            Tablecloths (see Gillett Johnson)

            More exhibitors (see Hays Englehart)

            Mailing list for your business

            Wristbands (Paul Bettelheim)

Big TV & DVD player for VIP booth

            Small TV for Rotary booth

            Cars, cars, cars

Sell, sell, sell - VIP and regular tickets

For heaven's sake, check out Krysten's email for the real information.

And show up on the 20th!

6/18/10: James Bouquin, mystery man from Buddy Burke

6/20/10: Motorama, 5:00 a.m. to midnight?

6/25/10:  Aymeric van den Hove, what a year.

7/2/10:  Becky Ware, how cool is Argentina?
