Greetings!

As you know, we are surviving extraordinary times here in Oakland County as the economic tsunami prompted by the auto industry collapse and restructuring has tested the spirit and resources of the wonderful people of southeast Michigan.  In spite of the challenges, we are happy to report that we expect to give 10 families the opportunity of homeownership in 2009 as we complete eight new Habitat homes and two Habitat rehabs - newly named ReHabitats.  We anticipate ReHabitat will serve many more families in 2010 and beyond as we negotiate partnerships with several local governments to transform blight into bright new blocks of safe, decent, affordable housing

As 2009 began, we accurately projected a decline in corporate funding, but expected to make up for it in several new government funding programs. We moved forward on this expectation in partnership with our corporate and faith-based partners who were able to hang in for 2009.   Our most important objective was our promise to our partner families who continued to put in their "sweat equity" and save money to become homeowners this year.

When we projected our revenue for 2009, we anticipated government grants would cover a portion of our construction costs. The political process eventually pushed these grants back to 2010. Meanwhile, some partners were unable to meet their full financial pledges.

The result is a deficit of about $100,000 in funding for our 2009 construction programs.  This endangers the outlook for the families we want to serve next year by: 1) carrying over expenses from this year to next year; and 2) accruing interest that diverts resources from home construction and family services. We cannot allow this to happen in light of the bright opportunities on the horizon for 2010.

You can help families in 2009 and 2010 by helping us pay off our construction projects for this year.

Please make a one-time, special donation to cover Habitat for Humanity construction and family services programs for 2009 and put us in a position to start 2010 strongly.  We could eliminate our entire 2009 construction deficit if you and every person who receives this email makes a one-time donation of $25.

Please help. Click here now to make secure online donation. Be sure to click on "one time donation" and then choose "Strong Finish 2009" in the drop-down box. You will receive a receipt and the gratitude of 10 families for whom the dream of homeownership will come true in 2009.

In gratitude for your decision to make a difference,

House Party 2009

The need for safe, decent, affordable housing has never been so great in southeast Michigan. Even so, the economic recession is making it more difficult for Habitat for Humanity to accomplish its mission. We need your help.

We ask you to throw a party at your home, church, school, or place of business on October 3 or 4. Invite your family, friends, or coworkers to have a good time. Your party can be anything you like--a tailgate party, wine-tasting, board games, costumes--anything. We ask that you set aside a few minutes to tell your guests about Habitat for Humanity, then ask them to make a financial contribution and/or sign up to volunteer. That's it!

The cost of the party is tax deductible (just like a money donation) and we'll provide a house party planning and promotion kit, including a DVD to show at your party. In addition, a professional chef and party planner will provide free advice and ideas to help you make your party one to remember.

Visit www.worldsbiggesthouseparty.org to learn more or to donate a house party. Have a party, build a dream!

Building on Faith logo
Building on Faith Sunday is coming September 13. On that day, Habitat Oakland County invites its faith partners to include a special announcement, meditation, or prayer in their worship assemblies to call attention to poverty. That afternoon, Habitat Oakland County will host a dedication service in Pontiac for the two Building on Faith homes built in 2009. A potluck dinner will follow the service. Habitat Oakland County needs volunteers to help plan and manage events on Building on Faith Sunday. This includes distributing promotional materials to Building on Faith partners, setting up and tearing down at the dedication and dinner, and coordinating food. Please click here to volunteer or call (248) 338-1843.
