MUSKEGON CAMPAIGN
CHAIR ANNOUNCED
Brad Hilleary, owner and CEO of Webb Chemical Service Corporation, has been named chair for the United Way of the Lakeshore's 2012 Muskegon County campaign.
Hilleary is continuing the tradition, established by his father, of running a full line commodity chemical distributor based in Muskegon Heights, with sales throughout the United States. Hilleary has been at Webb for 18 years, starting in sales and as purchasing manager. He was named vice president in 2007; on Jan. 1, 2011, he became CEO/owner.
As campaign chair, Hilleary also serves on United Way's board of directors. He has served on the campaign cabinet for two years, co-chairing the manufacturing division.
The theme of the 2012 campaign is "There's No Place Like Home." Hilleary said he identifies closely with that theme.
"My journey took me away for a while," he said of his time at Western Michigan University and jobs after college. "When I came back to Muskegon, sometimes you forget what you have until you don't have it. There is no place like home. Home is not simply a building, but a community of love, support, safety, and where opportunity abounds. We have all of that here." United Way focuses on ensuring that opportunity, support and safety are available for everyone, by impacting education, income and health.

AMERICORPS UPDATE
It has been six months now since Renyshia Pierce has been toting her computer to locations throughout the county performing outreach for benefit access. United Way has partnered with Goodwill Industries of West Michigan, Inc., and our state organization Michigan Association of United Ways, to promote benefit programs such as MiBridges and Call 2-1-1 through the efforts of AmeriCorps members.
Renyshia reports that "during my service time at Sacred Suds laundry facility, I was able to assist a man in applying for food assistance within MiBridges. He had never applied online to receive benefits because he was not computer savvy." Renyshia was able to help him apply and complete his application; he was grateful for the extra income.
Many non-profit organizations have taken advantage of Renyshia's free training on benefit access for staff and volunteers. To schedule a visit, contact Amanda Grover at Goodwill Industries at (231) 722-7871 ext. 246.

OVER $1.4 MILLION IN TAX RETURNS
FOR COMMUNITY THROUGH
VOLUNTEER VITA COALITION
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Services for West Michigan, a coalition of fifteen are nonprofit organizations, teamed up once again this year to provide free income tax preparation services for low to moderate income individuals and families eligible for significant state and federal tax credits such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Michigan Property Homestead Property Tax Credit.
This year VITA volunteers prepared 2,381 federal and state tax returns for individuals and families, returning $1,466,136 to the community. By comparison, in 2010 a total of 750 tax returns were filed and $820,000 returned to the community.
A wide range of dates, times, and locations were offered February to April 2012, including two all-day "Super Saturdays" held at Goodwill's Workforce Development Center in Muskegon. This year, the coalition expanded its reach beyond Muskegon County to also include Newaygo, Oceana, and Lake counties.
Thirty five volunteers generously donated their time to provide free tax preparation services at 13 locations in Muskegon and the surrounding counties. Volunteers were required to complete an intensive IRS training program and pass a certification test.
"Volunteers are key," said Goodwill Prosperity Center Manager Jane Drake. "The more volunteers we have, the more people we can serve."
