Graham's Gab

The cedar canvas canoe is away and the sailboat came out of the water last week too in preparation for winter storage.   However there is still to odd nice November day for paddling (heck was out paddling yesterday - 17 degrees and sunny!) so the SUP board and sea kayak remain on standby in the driveway or on the roof of the car, ready  at a moment's notice.

The pic above is of me, the lone paddleboarder, keeping up with the kayakers at the Georgian Bay Storm Gathering in mid October. The event did see a storm; a 966 milibar low stalled over James Bay causing 30 to 40 kn winds to blow over most of the Great Lakes all weekend.
  See the pics and videos.

I am happy and encouraged to announce that participation in our national paddling skill courses is up by 30% over last year!  That means more Canadians improved their skills and knowledge and will remain safer on our waterways, than in many years! There were also 20% more courses offered this year, than last year.  But the season is not over. Many October & November skill courses are still to be be reported (about 25 canoe, 48 sea kayak, 10 SUP courses), so likely will see even higher numbers yet.  Stay tuned for full report, being prepared for the upcoming AGM, December 10, 2011.

Kanawa Magazine is out and should be hitting everyone's mailboxes right about now.  It's a little late, however filled with some great armchair reading for the coming late fall days on canoeing and SUP'ing.

Until next time, please stay in tight & upright on the water,

Graham Ketcheson

Kanawa & Rapid Media Update

APPS Sponsors

With excitement, Paddle Canada announced earlier this week, the new partnership with Rapid Media in 2012.  With sadness PC acknowledged, the partnership will effectively end the publishing of Kanawa Magazine after 33 years.  There will still be two more great and final issues of Kanawa published up until February 2012.

PC President Blair Doyle had these words to say about the recent announcement:

APPS Sponsors "Kanawa magazine has been the representative life blood of PC for over 30 years and I, like several addicted PC paddlers, feel a loss in coming to my future. Alas, all good things, do have to come to an end, and like the rest of the world, we have to live in the reality of today, making decisions for tomorrow. Rapid is very progressive, a 'make sense' partner.   Journeying with them may lead us both to unexpected destinations. So, I am really quite excited to see the Rapid communication machine helping convey the PC message starting in 2012."

Board of Director Update:  Richard Alexander & Bryan Sarauer.

APPS Sponsors

The PC board of directors is pleased to welcome back past president, Richard Alexander, who has been on a leave since summer of 2009.  Richard has jumped back in and taken on the Treasurer's role.  Richard was president of PC from 2006 to 2009 and lives in St John's Newfoundland.

APPS SponsorsIn early fall, we got news that Saskatchewan director, Jim MacDonald, unable to continue in his role, submitted his resignation to the board.  We thank Jim, for all his work and dedication to the organization this last year. After a quick nomination call, Byran Sarauer of Saskatoon, stepped forth as the only candidate for director of Saskatchewan.  Bryan is a sea kayak instructor and has served as a member of executive of the Saskatoon Canoe Club.  Welcome on board Bryan.

PC Instructor News

1. Course Admin Tip of the Month : Using the 'Update' feature

When viewing a course details, use the 'Update' link to:

  • Change dates (course is postponed until later in the season or next year)
  • Change or add an instructor assisting on course
  • Change a course location(s)
  • Change whether or not a course is publicly listed or not
  • For Instructor Courses, changing dates feature, is often used to move dates forward in time, to allow instructor candidates to continue to "pre-register" (but don't forget to change dates back to original before completing course report!).

What a wonderful tool the 'Update' link is, and makes life so much easier for us all!
