The summer heat is here. That's why I posted a pic of me with toque on at the beach at the symposium in May when it was 8 degrees out, just to remind me of how cold it was then.  In fact it was so hot in Kingston when I sat down to write this, the office computer refused to start.  I found out after taking it to the repair shop that it was all a heat / humidity induced problem.  Perfect indicator to take time off and go paddling perhaps?  I just acquired a new Starboard Cruiser SUP and everyone who has tried it loves it so far.  Can't wait to try some wave surfing during a big blow on Lake Ontario.

In June I found myself in the 1000 Islands teaching a Sea Kayak Level 2 Skills Course which was a lot of fun. In early July I was back to the region, camping with my family and friends at Sugar Island (near Gananoque, ON) owned by the ACA. I encourage all members in in close enough proximity, to take advantage of the special camping rate, part of your PC member benefit.  This island is a jewel.

The messages in the office have quieted down, meaning one thing: all of you are too busy out paddling.  A good thing.  I will be taking some late August holidays at which point the office will be closed so please be patient as I catch up again in the fall.

Stay cool,

Graham Ketcheson

'Canoe Canada' Video - From the Paddle Canada / CRCA Archives

Paddle Canada presents CANOE CANADA - A look at the popularity of canoeing in Canada from young and old, on lakes and rivers, from solo canoes to big canoes. Some of the equipment shown is dated, however the techniques and styles of paddling shown are not. Much of the information contained in the series of videos is still relevant for paddlers today.  Offered in High Definition (HD) however clicking on 'HD' logo will turn it off for slower internet connection users.

Enjoy ! (especially the orange ribbed pfd's and pink paddling jackets!
It's time to bring back the retro paddling fashions!

Canadian Heritage River Calendar

Parks Canada's Canadian Heritage River System announced in late spring, that they will no longer be a funding partner of the CHR Calendar.  Paddle Canada is unable to produce the calendar without the full assistance of the Parks Canada Heritage Rivers. Therefore we regret to inform all our members that the 2012 Canadian Heritage River Calendar, will not be produced and sent to you this year as one of your members benefits.   We apologize in advance.  At this time there are no plans for Paddle Canada to replace this version of the calendar however; a new product called the Canadian Paddling 2012 Calendar, is now independently being developed by Anne Baxter and Associates (editors of Kanawa Magazine).   Copies of this new calendar will be available to PC members to purchase at a discount late this fall.

Call for Member Services Committee Chairperson

We are putting the call out to the membership for a volunteer who would consider joining and leading the active Member Services Committee in their annual meetings and tasks.  This person needs to be a member (individual or instructor) in good standing for the 2011 season.

Thanks to our outgoing chairperson, Viki Cirkvencic, who has worked hard over 2 years in organizing and steering the committee in their tasks.  Viki's enthusiasm and energy will be missed.

If you would like to learn more about the role of the Member Services Committee, please read more here.   Or call (888-252-6292) or email mail the office.

New Strategic Partnership with Canadian Canoe Foundation

Paddle Canada is pleased to announce a new strategic partnership wth the
Canadian Canoe Foundation (CCF).   The CCF is a registered charity that sends young Canadians on environmental education canoe-trip adventures. Their participants return to their communities as 'Water Leaders', educating their family and friends about environmental issues in their watershed and working with our partners towards solutions.

The CCF says: " we are very interested in working with Paddle Canada and each Regional Member Association in order to develop a Canoe Canada 2012 project in all provincial regions of Canada.  We want our youth participants to be introduced to the world of canoeing certifications and to benefit from a certified instruction session.  The partnership will also help raise awareness of Paddle Canada's and the RMA's programs."
