Paddle Canada - The only national recreational organization supporting all craft that can be paddled.

Graham's Gab

I'm just back from the Paddle Canada Atlantic Paddlling Symposium. It was a large gathering of about 160  participants, coaches, and volunteers, all enjoying Newfoundland hospitality. Despite air and sea temperatures in the single digits, all seemed to have great time.

I had the opportunity to teach a number of sea kayak sessions, two with current PC president Blair Doyle and another with past prez Richard Alexander. I took in a session with Kevin Silliker and Tim Humes on Canoe Poling, some brand new fun for me.

Keynote speaker, Kevin Callan was there too, keeping us laughing at the Saturday evening banquet. Maligiaq Padilla from Greenland was Sunday night's banquet speaker who showed us amazing videos of Greenland Kayak competitions.

It was great to meet so many Atlantic PC members again. This reminded me how importance events like these are. They are the glue that bind us nationally as an organization. There is nothing like meeting face-to-face with the members and, in this case, most of the PC directors east of Ontario.

Last weekend I was at the MEC Paddlefest in Toronto teaching a couple sea kayak and SUP sessions. There was  an instructor development workshop on the Friday before the weekend festivities, sponsored by PC (since most of the Paddlefest instructors are PC members). PC had a booth there and was great of those who stop by to say Hi. Other MEC Paddlefest events that PC will be attending this season are in Edmonton and Halifax.

May your paddle always pull water,

ACA's Sugar Island Special Offer to PC Members

Donate to the Kirk Wipper Legacy fund in memory of Kirk Wipper

The American Canoe Association owns a 47 acre island in the Canadian waters of the St. Lawrence River, 1000 Islands area. They have owned the island since 1901. The Sugar Island Trustees would like to invite & encourage Paddle Canada members to use Sugar Island this coming season. The island is set up to accommodate paddlers with overnight basic tenting including outhouses, but without running water. The island is easily accessible from the mainland just east of Gananoque, Ontario, by a short paddle or water taxi.

The current Island use fees are $8/day for ACA members and $15/overnight for guests. ACA is offering Paddle Canada members a rate of $10/day per person for the 2011 season. If you are interested in reserving time on the island, please contact Graham at the PC office.

BC mourns the loss of Kayaking Instructor Brian Creer

Brian Creer passed away on Monday May 30th. He was a long-time prominent river kayak instructor, paddler, and mentor to many British Columbians, although he was not a PC Instructor.

PC Instructor member Tony Shaw says "...he was a strong advocate for the RCABC (Regional Member Assoc. of Paddle Canada). However, he influenced more people in BC than anyone else in canoe, kayak, slalom, and down-river racing.  His contribution was enormous!"

4. AGE PRE-REQS ON PC COURSES

There have been numerous inquiries to office about age requirements for courses.

  • There is no age restriction for any SKILL course. Course directors are to use their discretion in accepting young and old participants on courses. It's a judgement call based on a participant's size, physical ability, and maturity (for youngsters, although this could apply to some adults too). Don't forget to have parents sign the Youth Waivers.
  • A minimum age requirement does apply for all INSTRUCTOR Courses:
    16 years old.

5. UPDATES TO PROGRAM MANUALS & RESOURCES  (members area)

Under the Canoe Program link, you will find:

  • New versions (April 2011) of the Lake Canoe & Moving Water Manuals
  • New Safety Briefing and Canoe Strokes Documents (May 2011)
  • New Canoe Poling Making Document (May 2011)
  • Updated versions of
    • Ratios, Course Lengths, and How to Become an Instructor
    • International River Classification System
    • Program Progression Charts
    • Assistant Apprentice and Mentorship Information

Under the SUP Program link, you will find:

  • New SUP Program Manual - Version 2.1 - May 2011
  • SUP Instructor Resources:  Some SUP website resource sites have been shared on the Instructor Resource blog pages.

6. COURSES vs CLINICS

A course is defined as teaching the full curriculum outlined in the PC program manual for that specific level. An evaluation is done and certification is awarded to participants at the end.

A clinic is defined as teaching only a portion or specific section of a full course curriculum. In other words, a clinic is a course where no certification is awarded since not all the requirements for the course would be met.

To offer a clinic, the clinic must follow the guidelines as outlined for a Paddle Canada Skill Level course. To register a clinic, you must register it the same as a full course and then check the Clinic box. Clinics are subject to the same criteria for administration as a regular course. Waivers must still be signed, ratios maintained, and course fees remitted.

7. AND FINALLY... a Big Reminder to All PC Instructors Regarding Certification Cards and Certificates

It is the responsibility of all instructors to issue cards and/or certificates following their courses. The PC office no longer issues certification or instructor membership cards. The office is getting many misguided requests for proof of certification from 2009 and 2010 course participants.

Please find and print certification cards under Additional Forms link=> Instructor Services menu. Note: If you are unable to print cards yourself - most local printing stores like Staples can provide this service in a fast, reliable time frame
