Graham's Gab

For the new year, I gave Current Strokes a new look. Do you like it?

Speaking of new... We are working on a new public website at www.PaddleCanada.com.
Feel free to look around while it is under construction. Most of the news and latest updates are being posted there now too. We hope this will become our primary site very soon. To manage your member account, please continue to visit www.paddlINGcanada.com.

Most of our country has enjoyed new snowfall, especially in the western Rockies. I know many of you are taking advantage of a multitude of winter sports. Others are still paddling where the water is softer.

Almost 200 paddling courses have already been registered for 2011. Many begin this month as pool clinics, proving that paddling in Canada is truly a year-round activity.

May your paddle always pull water,

Graham

Transport Canada www.tc.gc.ca
Registration of Canoes/Kayaks among other things..

Paddle Canada has reviewed and consulted with Transport Canada officials on the topic of the new vessel regulations and how they apply to canoes/kayaks used on any "guided excursion."  PC has come up with a number of summaries to help you understand how these new regulations apply to you, your business, school group, group of friends, paddling club, and so on. These new regulations will also be summarized within PC's three paddling program manuals:

Guided Excursion Small Vessel Regulations
FAQ Sheet for Guided Excursion -- Small Vessel Regulations
Procedures for Canoe/Kayak Commercial Vessel Registration

Thanks to PC's Program Development Committees and other dedicated volunteers for drafting these summaries and consulting with Transport Canada on these topics.  We hope to keep posting more updates soon.

If you have detailed questions, please contact Transport Canada via www.tc.gc.ca.

Instructor News

1. 2nd Apprentice Menu in Course Registration Form

There is now an additional Apprentice Instructor drop-down menu

on the course registration pages. Both Canoe and Sea Kayak courses now have the potential to have up to 2 apprentice instructors on a course.

Please refer to the program manuals for specifics, or contact the appropriate PDCs with questions.

2. New Waterfront Canoe Instructor Membership

A Waterfront Canoe Instructors category is new for 2011. The rate for this membership category is only $20 plus applicable provincial tax (GST or HST). This allows instructors to register and teach Waterfront Canoe courses only. This membership level does not include issues of Kanawa, the Heritage River Calendar, PC decal, or Instructor Pro-Deal Purchase Programs. READ MORE

3. 2011 Sea Kayak Manual

A new version of the Sea Kayak Manual is now available -- Version 12.04. In the first few pages, the SK PDC has summarized all the changes to the program over the last few years. To download your copy, simply login to your instructor account and click on "Sea Kayak Program" under the "Instructor Services" menu. (Hint: You have to renew your membership for 2011 before you can view the "Instructor Services" menu. Sneaky, eh?)

Please contact the SK PDC (skpdc@paddlecanada.com) with any questions about the new manual.
