Graham's Gab I recently returned from the Atlantic Paddling Symposium. It was wonderful to meet so many of the east-coast members and volunteers from the regional paddling associations. It was great too to meet instructors who are all so motivated, involved, and wanting to further the PC program at all levels, especially with youth. I was impressed by the talent and quality of the presenters.
Mark Scriver, from Ontario, entertained us with slides from his paddling adventures across Canada and beyond. And Greg Stamer, from Florida, wowed us with his tales of circumnavigating Newfoundland solo in the fastest time ever. (Using a Greenland paddle the whole way!)
Teaching an intro to surf kayaking with Christopher Lockyer got me out on the water. As did a rock-hopping session with Blair Doyle (our PC President) and guest instructor & friend Erik Ogaard, from Ontario. Lots of fun was had by all, and the weather was fantastic.
Thanks to the Atlantic Symposium Committee (especially Christopher and Jamie), Canoe Kayak Nova Scotia, Canoe Kayak New Brunswick, and the Newfoundland Labrador Paddling Assoc and the many business sponsors for their support. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this event a success! A personal thanks goes out to Christopher and his family, Scott
Cunningham, Gayle Wilson, and Blair Doyle and his family for
looking after me so well in true east-coast fashion.
The May long weekend took me to Georgian Bay for the White Squall Paddle Party to fly the PC flag. Rick Wise (PC Vice Pres) was in attendance, among many other instructors from the best paddling schools in Ontario. A highlight was the Fred Eaglesmith concert. Fred arrived early for the gig and had time to build one of the best cardboard kayaks ever seen at the Squall's annual cardboard kayak challenge - it stayed afloat for 3 laps! Geez, who would have thought musicians would know so much about positive buoyancy & boat design! Then again, the classic car design suited both him and the principles of flotation.
Next, I'll be at this month's MEC Paddlefest in Toronto, June 12-13. Please drop by the PC booth and say hello.

2010 Central-Canadian
Paddling Instructor Symposium
September 24-26, 2010 Minden Wildwater
Preserve (Gull River), Ontario
A weekend of top-level workshops for instructors of all disciplines.
We're bringing together whitewater, sea, and freshwater canoe and kayak
instructors in a fun, informal yet full weekend of clinics on and off
the water.
Who Will Be There? Ok, well there's...
- Mark Scriver
- one of Canada's best-known rodeo paddlers who just happens to be an
awesome sea kayaker, canoeist, open boater, and now stand-up convert.
- Kevin Callan - author, adventurer and all-round good guy.
- Serge Savard
is coming from la belle province - he's an amazing sea kayaker and
teacher who can flip a kayak upright in deep water with one hand. Seriously.
- Ron Bianchi - weather expert and executive meteorologist for the Weather Network.
- Brenna Kelly - whitewater kayak instructor from the Ottawa Kayak School and graduate of Algonquin College's Outdoor Adventure Program.
- Andrew Westwood - a wilderness canoe
adventurer, whitewater paddler, open canoe slalom competitor, and school
teacher living in Ottawa, with over 15 years of instructional experience in the USA and Canada.
- Christopher Lockyer
- from Nova Scotia, (Canada's Ocean Playground!) is an awesome sea kayak
instructor, coordinator of the Atlantic Paddling Symposium, and
a paddler with plenty of stories to share.
- More presenters to come
Registration begins at the end of June. Please check the Paddle Canada News Page for updates and for more info on this event.

New Environment Committee
An Environmental Committee has just been formed with Jay Morrison
as Chairperson. Jay has over 30 years of federal government work
experience. Since 1998 he has been on Board of Directors of the Ottawa Valley
chapter of CPAWS and was once National Trustee. A Paddle Canada canoe instructor as well, Jay will use his paddling, conservation, and
government experience in leading this new committee. Their aim is to be the voice of recreational paddlers on issues that affect
canoeist and kayakers in Canada.
The first task is to prioritize initiatives and projects. If you have suggestions,
please forward them on to environment@paddlingcanada.com. Thanks for your input!
