CANOEING PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Dear  ,

Paddle Canada Board of Directors approves New Canoeing Program!!

The Canoe Program Development Committee (PDC) is proud to announce that the Paddle Canada Board of Directors has approved the new canoe program design.  Designed to make the program more accessible, the new canoe program is based on the following Venue Chart.

Paddle Canada Canoe Program Venue Chart

Notes:
*There are three (3) venue titles (Lake, River and Ocean); these are not courses.
**The Canoe Tripping course is the same regardless of its location in different venues.
***Place holder(s) for future development .
How does my old certification match the new Paddle Canada Progam?

The certification transfers to the new national program have already been completed in the Paddle Canada database to help avoid any confusion. You can see exactly how your past certification translates to Paddle Canada's new National Program simply by logging in, activating your membership and selecting 'My Certifications' from the Instructor Services menu.

There is currently one exception to the transfer that has yet to be completed since it requires a manual manipulation of our existing data.
  • A Flawater Canoeing Instructor Trainer + Lakewater Level l Instructor should also be granted:
    • Lake Canoe Instructor Trainer Advanced Tandem and
    • Lake Canoe Instructor Trainer Advanced Solo

This equivalancy will be completed in the very near future and will be announced as soon as the database updates are complete.  Our apologies, in the interim, for the incovenience.  Full details on transfer levels can be found on the 2009 Paddle Canada Canoe Program Chart.

NOTE: The above 2009 Paddle Canada Canoe Program Chart outlines the transfer of certifications from the past Paddle Canada Canoe Program (1998-2008) to the new Paddle Canada National Program standard (2009).  It is valid only for Canoeing Certifications received and recorded by Paddle Canada up to December 31, 2008.  Under the terms of the Legal Agreement signed between Paddle Canada and the Ontario Recreational Canoeing & Kayaking Association, effective 01-January-2009, Paddle Canada has ceased to offer any training based on the previous manual.  All previous materials based on the ORCKA program, should be immediately destroyed or disposed of.  We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

What programs can I teach under the new Paddle Canada Program?

The full list of 2009 Canoe Programs is now available on the Paddle Canada website under the heading Courses » Canoeing » Programs » [Select the discipline].

The direct link to the main Canoe Program Page is:

On each Instructor Program description page is a full list of the Skill Level programs you are entitled to teach at that level.   Discussion is still on-going at the Instructor Trainer and Instructor Mentorship levels and therefore many of these descriptions will appear as 'Not applicable' until these program requirements are approved by the Board of Directors.

With regards to the Skill Level programs, the 'Skills at a Glance' charts previously provided are now outlined in the Program descriptions of each Skill Level discipline.  As you can see, while these descriptions are not yet completely fleshed out; but the requirements for each skills course are defined 'at a glance', allowing you to begin planning and preparation of your courses for the 2009 paddling season.

The PDC is continuing to work very hard on the launch of the new Canoe Program manual as a whole.  Paddle Canada will continue to update the Programs pages, and to announce any new information, as it becomes available.  In the interim, please use the information provided on these webpages as your guide to the new canoe program.

As always, we thank you for your feedback, time and consideration regarding the implementation of the new programs to date. Your feedback has been a vital part of shaping the new Canoe Certification Program and your passion and professionalism have allowed us to develop a program that we feel truly reflects the diversity and vision of a strong and vibrant Canadian recreational canoeing community.
