Dear ,
During the fall of 2008 the Sea Kayak Program Development Committee (SKPDC) discussed the many comments and the advice that came to us through the 2008 paddling season. While there are no changes in the existing program for 2009, there are many clarifications of items that caused confusion and also several additions where descriptions had not yet been completed.
Here are a few examples of items to look for:
- A number of small but significant writing errors have been corrected, such as:
- Level 1 Instructor "Wilderness First Aid" now reads "Standard First Aid" and,
- Contact tow "with a short line," the words "with a short line" have now been omitted.
The requirements and responsibilities of Assistant-Instructors and Apprentice-Instructors have been clarified.
One of the most frequent requests from across the country was to rename the Flatwater course. The first course in the program is now called "Introduction to Kayaking."
Additional information about first aid requirements, the responsibilities of the Instructor Trainer and new sections on Heritage and Environment have also been added.
The Sea Kayak Program is a product of the combined experience of all Paddle Canada Instructors. The Program Development Committee and the Board of Trustees has worked diligently to make the program of courses reflect your comments and advice.
In response to a motion of the Board of Directors, the Program Development Committee has put forward a plan to create and implement a Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Guiding certification. During 2009 a sub-committee of the Sea Kayak PDC will be formed to research and write the necessary additions to the Sea Kayak Program. This sub-committee will be formed from one member of the SK PDC and two new members with significant experience with the world of sea kayak guiding across Canada. The intention is to implement the Paddle Canada Sea Kayak Guiding certification in 2010.
With best wishes for the 2009 paddling season!
Please forward your feedback, comments, questions and/or concerns to:
